Hey guys..I just bought my 99 GSX like two weeks ago, and I've been having no problems with the car EXCEPT for the fact that second gear grinds on every single shift, and this just started happening out of nowhere the other day after I tached 1st up slightly more than I usually do (maybe like 4k or so..) It grinds even if I shift at a really low RPM..so I'm going with the assumption that my synchro is completely shot..I was just wondering if any of you guys have had to replace the second gear synchro and where I could possibly get a pretty decent aftermarket one??..I'm hoping this isnt going to cost me a fortune and that the synchro is the only part I'll have to replace..all help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

i have no experience with replacing syncros. my 2nd gear also tends to grind, but its not bad, so i dont really worry about it. it only tends to grind when it wants to, maybe i just have to be a little more gentle.

I'm not gonna lie to ya, replacing syncros is probably one of the easier jobs to do in the trans, but it certainly isnt easy in the first place. Tolerances need to be kept in spec or you will soon find out that even though it might not grind anymore, it might be damn tough to get it in gear period. When I rebuilt my trans for a grinding first and second gear, I had to replace both first and second gears ($179.00) and the hub and sleeve assembly because they were beat/worn so badly($135.00) from the guy I bought it from(got the car cheap because of it). Also plan to spend a good 30 on bearings at least and bunch of your time. :thumb: Just beware I guess, with your trans grinding at such low rpms, i wouldn't be suprised if a speed gear and or the sleeve it torn up as well. Good luck.

mine grinds only when the tranny is warmed up. off a cold start i can shift at 6500 and no grind. try a better tranny fluid that what im gonna do. i believe its called BG syncroshift or something. we need like almost 3 bottles of it for our cars.

i just bought my 95 talon and it is a struggle to put it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and reverse, adn it usually grinds wen i shift into those gears. mine also shifts better at high rpms. i just changed the tranny fluid. i dont know much about transmissions. culd it possibly be the synchros?

A set of synchros from team rip will set ya back around $185 or so, and you can install them yourself provided you access to a press.. its not super hard, jsut make sure you keep track of the bearing spacers when you split the case...

i just took my car to the shop. whoever last changed the clutch forgot put the bushing on the clutch pedal. with the bushing it shifts smooth, except 2nd gear stills girnds and pops out if i dont slam it into 2nd. wat culd cause it to do tat?

Can you elaborate on the difficulty of a DIY synchro replacement? I'm taking my tranny out (for the first time) in a little while to replace a few synchros and to swap my flywheel for an Xact. Shepherd just rebuilt the trans 1600 miles ago and it's grinding 1st 2nd and 3rd on and off. 3rd almost always grinds when I shift fairly liberally. It's been doing that ever since I grinded one speedshift. The other gears haven't been abused at all since I got the transmission back from John.
What would I be getting into if I tried to replace 3 gear synchronizers??
Any step by step instructions on this btw?

I don't want to hijack your thread. This is on the same subject though and applies to your problem.

dude.. are you aware that it can take up to 4 or even 5000 miles for a rebuilt tranny to fully break in.. usually after a rebuild the tranny will be notch and even grind for a while because the parts need to wear in properly..

min has 1500 on it since the rebuild and its still notchy as hell.. its getting a little better.. but it takes time..

give it a while before ya yank it.. if shep rebuilt it then its prolly ok, it just needs time to wear in..

did he replace all your gears? or use the ones that were there.. or what?

The transmission is supposedly new. Believe me this isn't a break in thing. Notchy isn't the word. POSSIBLY for 1st and 2nd, but 3rd gear grinds constantly with higher rpm quick shifts.

I don't know. How would I test that to find out?

It seems that have drawn attention away from the original post. If anyone can help me with my transmission issues please PM or AIM me. Otherwise, please continue with the original question.

Couple of things I have to add on this thread:

1. Trannies do not need to break in. There is nothing in a tranny that needs to break in or any parts that need to wear into each other. Syncros least of all. Notchy shifting from the start is there to stay and/or will only get worse.

2. Replacing the tranny fluid will not help out futuregsxowner. Fluids can help out worn syncros on their last leg, and maybe make the car driveable for a couple thousand miles, but its just a band-aid. And from the how his 2nd gear syncro sounds, its far beyond that sort of help. Once the syncro is that trashed there is nothing to do but replace it.
I would suggest skipping 2nd gear until you do this. Go from 1st to 3rd. The more you use a gear that grinds, the worse you will tear it up. You SHOULD replace the gear if you have been grinding it, but if you dont plan on doing this, then avoid making it worse or it will just be notchy when you replace the syncro.

Trannies do not need to break in.

not true. i know that with my friends suburu 2.5rs, when we installed a new race tranny in it, they recommended doing figure 8s in both directions in forward and reverse for a 15-20 mins. the difference before doing that and the difference after was huge.

I was under the impression that we were discussion standard transmissions?

if the tranny has a mix of NEW and USED parts (I.E. new synchros with used gears) it needs to be worn in.. thats why i specified REBUILT in my reply, not new..
new trannys with all new parts should be pretty much good to go.. because all parts are new..

The figure 8s are to wear in the lsd, with clucth plates.
