I just got a !992 Plymouth laser Rs AWD about 3 weeks ago and ever sense i got it it would make a grinding noise going into second gear, so i double clutched, and it would still make the grinding but not as bad, and the other day while i was driving i went to shift into 2nd and it just ground so i pulled over and now it will kick out of second when i let the clutch out , so i drove it from first to third and believe that it is the syncros, would i be better off buying a used tranny or replacing the syncros, if that is what it is??? :toobad:

If you lost the gear, it's probably more than just the synchros.

If you can find a good deal on a rebuild, do that - you'll have piece of mind that it was done right and it'll be like a fresh transmission.

If not, find a used unit, but beware of scammers.

Good luck!

I used to have a 92 talon. It would always grind going in to 2nd which I've heard is very common.. We pulled the tranny and replaced the syncroring. They had come out with a new design syncroring, which completly solved the problem.

I now have a 95 talon and I am having a little different problem. When I bought the car the only way to stay in first gear was to hold the shifter in first gear on take off, or it would pop out and grind. Once driving in first gear it would stay there. But other people I let drive my car have grinded it so many time, that now I can't put it into first gear no matter what. I have checked the shifter cable to see if it's not pushing the far enough, but it is fine. I suspect it is a shifter fork problem, but I would appriate any input.

i recently fix a tranny that had your problem and it turns out, the first gear bearing snap ring had came off! but yours can very well be some other problem ! it needs to be pulled out and opened up to really accurately determine the problem!!

It just needs new synchros. Honestly, pull the tranny yourself, send it to John Shepherd, and for close to $1000 (which is damn near what any junk tranny shop is gonna charge you to rebuild it), you can have THE best tranny guy rebuilding your tranny and guaranteed to shift like butter. Or, take it to your local AANCO tranny place, have Joe Schleprock, rebuild your trans, charge you $1000, and you will still have a tranny that shifts notchy and like shit. Your call.

My 2nd gear is out too right now, I got a spare trany for 200 so you might check your area dsmers before going rebuild.

As the cause, Ive heard all of what is said above except the 1st gear synchro thing but a mechanic also said the second gear sleeve is busted? dont know costs to repair but if your serious about your car go like the guy said above and send it to shep!!
