I have a 91 :talon: Talon TSI and when I shift it into second gear it just grinds!!! OUCH!!! What do I need to do to fix this? Is it expensive? Am I able to do it myself or should I take it to a shop? I know pretty much nothing about cars!!! LOL

Thanks
Dave :dsm: :talon:

Can you put it into second when the car is off? First of all I'd drain the existing fluid in the tranny and put some new stuff in. People with worn synchros have had luck with Royal Purple or Pennzoil Synchromesh. If that doesn't help your problem, it's time for a rebuild.
If getting into 4th is a problem too, I'd say your shifter cables might be out of adjustment.

No it does not go into 2nd gear at all, even when the egine is turned off. The shifter will go down into the second gear space but will not lock into second gear. Guessing that its time for a new tranny. :toobad:

IF you are going to rebuilt it, look into TRE or John Sheppard trannies, that way you build them onces and thats it no more trannies problems ever. Unless you can't drive.

Like how it sounds like you just throw that in there. ROFL

Really dont plan on rebuilding it right now. What are my other options? Is there something that I can do to possibly fix this?

Hey i had the exact same problem no second gear, even when rev matched it wouldnt go in just a horrible grind, and with the car off it would go in the slot were the second gear would go but no engagment wats so ever like i was shifting in dead space.. i took out my tranny out and the oil was disgusting, it looked like sparkling oil you could see the metal flakes in the sludge..i was pissed cause this was my second tranny in 3 months.. i researched and anybody who would just wanna change the synchro was going to charge you about 500-1000 bucks .. i was like man just for the synchro?? cause i assumed thats all i needed, but they still considered it a re-build....so my best bets were to just get it rebuild right so i went to shepard..$895 and you dont have to worry about overcharges in our case cause in the rebuild he changes your entire second gear he should be shipping it out on friday back to me....i really hope evrything goes well cause i know how much of a headache a tranny could be..GOOD LUCK

Hmmmm.. kinda more money then I have right now.... How long have you been without your car? How long have they had your Tranny?

i shipped it out this past friday he started to work on it yesturday and friday he ships it out i should be getting mon tues or wed.. my process took about 8 business days but they state to have been a little backed up right now.. it usually take about 5 business day.. hey if you time but no money try dog box racing the same job is about the same for a 2 hundred dollers less.. he is kinda private he is a really good guy too... but hey overall whatever you end up doing think of this.... sacrafice now so in the futer you dont have to worry about it any more... do it right the first time.. cause alot of people waste there money twice.. if you try to avoid that you will be surprised how much money you could save.
