I just got car running(bought car with no drivetrain). I got a trans and installed new second and third gear syncros. I also installed a welded center diff but that should have nothing to do with this. Well, car drove good except when you try to shift to second gear it kicks it back out or if you try to hold it into second it grinds. It feels like the slider is not fully engaging the sycncro.

I pulled the trans out and have the case appart. It looks to me as if the slider moves to the extent of its travel like it should. If I let it go, it will stay in position, but if I turn the gears at all it springs back to neutral. I have limited experience with transmissions so I wondered if you had any suggestions. On the other gears when you shift to a gear its like the slider kind of clicks into place. This one feels like it doesnt engage far enough to do that. Just dont know why. I am going to take another look at it today. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not sure what I did wrong.

Thanks
Ben

Could be a couple of things. What do the teeth on the slider, and 2nd gear look like? Could also be a bad intermediate shaft bearing. Also do a basic check that all the parts are installed correctly, and that the detent balls are in.

All of the detent balls were in place. The teeth look ok as far as I can tell. I have the shaft with the 1-2 syncros removed now. It slides onto second gear fine. It just feels like it doesnt want to stay there real well(especially when it was intalled). As far as the bad bearing thing, how would I check? Is there no play at all in a new bearing? I know this one has some play in it. It still spins free though.

Thanks for the help.

Did you make sure to install the springs, and keys in the hub? There should be no play in the intermediate shaft. The manual calls for it to have a few thousandths preload. Did you take the shim out from under the bearing races, and use solder to calculate the shim needed?

Springs and keys are all there. I did not measure for shims. I just put it back how it was. This was my first time doing this.

I just now pressed the gears loose from the shaft so I could inspect everything. I think that the teeth on the slider might be worn. Does anyone have a pic of how they should look for the second gear side. On mine they are signifigantly farther away from the edge of the slider than they are on the first gear side of the slider.

Thanks
Ben

Went to a friends house, and let him look at it. The teeth on the slider were ground down. He had one laying there that was in good shape, so I am going to use that one.
