I've been reading old threads about the SBR G50 and it seems that there are really mixed reviews on this turbo. Can owners and previous owners of the SBR G50 please give me their feedback and experiences on this turbo?
Please answer these questions for me if you can:
- How many miles do you currently have on the turbo?
- How is the quality of the turbo? Any issues arise (i.e., shaft play, bad seals)?
- If you dyno'd your car w/ the turbo please list your whp, torque, and psi numbers. It would be great if you can also post up the dyno graphs.
- What psi are you running and when do you hit full boost?
- What do you think are the pros and cons of this turbo?
- Do you recommend this turbo?

I'm upgrading from a EvoIII 16g turbo and have my eye specifically one the SBR G50 internally gated turbo. Final question is...do you think it is a worthwhile upgrade from the 16g to the G50?

The said turbo review can be had at my tech article :

It's basically a turbonetics CHRA mated with their own compressor housing and turbine housing. Safe to say, mine fell apart after 6k of 20 psi boosting and SBR did nothing to warranty it (or even try to help me). Fastest I ever went was 13.9@106 in my old FWD. In comparison to the same setup (only difference was I had a PTE BB5031 turbo @ 20 psi) I trapped 4 mph faster.

Yes, I've seen your review Tom. Your review and your comments about the G50 in other threads is part of the reason I wanted to make this thread to get more G50 owners to give me their opinions also. Thank you for such a detailed review. Props to you for taking the time!

ROFL ROFL Got you beat, 2 years at 22Psi ZERO issues :thumb:

My only concern is nobody can get this G50 to spool to 20psi in under 4.5k RPM WTF

Current profile.

Went straight from the T25 to this, WAY better driveability, with the T25 I could barely do hills in the rain, boost comes on WAY to fast for a Fwd stock, with no factory lsd option :notgood:

Now boost comes on in a very manigable way, but yes, I wish it wasn't as laggy as it is.
Still looking into it, but I have nothing ported and stock O2 housing still to try changing

I like it, beats the crap outa my old T25, no though I'd probly go with a ball bearing version of a simular turbo in hopes of getting better spool.

-5-8k miles on turbo over 2 years dd car
-zero shaft play, seal issues
-Can't afford dyno time in my region its outrageous, but my but dyno and running other cars on the scene im over 300hp on 22psi easy. turbo is rated 25-35psi for the efficiency range so i'm not even pushing it yet :tease:
-22psi about 4700ish makes 20psi
-good power, capable of its rating, bushings might be holding it back, cons/ slow spool, but good for non lsd Fwd. Like I said a ball bearing version of this turbo is probly :thumb:
- over all a good turbo capable of well over 300hp porting+ cams would realy wake it up I think.

PS untill I got full3" downpipe back exhaust, and maf-t blow through and 3"intake pipe spool was over 5k, be prepared to get ALL your mods.

Happy and fast but wish for faster spool. go ball bearing or ask for a price cut, i've gone round with SBR about my spool and they won't do anything, but have been helpful technical assistance wise from day1

:dsm:

Looks like I'm leaning towards keeping the 16g until I can afford to upgrade to the bb PTE 5031E or similar. The SBR G50 is listed at a good price, but the spool up seems pretty laggy on the 2.0l without internal mods.
