I'm pretty confident that my alternators keep having the voltage regulators go out due to the heat from my exhaust system. I have heat shields up and it doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Alternators start out great in the 14v area and slowly work their way down to death.

My question is, does the self exciting regulator for the saturn alternator stand up to heat better? Is it possible to relocate the self exciting regulator away from the alternator and exhaust heat using wires to connect it?

Lifetime replacements are no longer so quick with my fmic and external wastegate. Thanks

Well I just lost my 4th alternator in a year. Im gonna grab another Orielly one for now, hopefully it will last over 3 weeks unlike my last one. I'm going to give this Saturn alternator and self exiting regulator a try next week though. Hopefully it will hold up.

I wouldn't say it was the heat as it may be P/S fluid leaking on it and destroying it. That and antifreeze kill them quickly. Not to mention that most alt. rebiulds are crap it seems with DSM's. I ended up switching to a GM self exiciting alt. which works fine but my large mitsu pulley doesn't spin it fast enuff at idle. I havent heard of this problem with the Saturn alt. Had to make my own bracket but it doesn't fail in 3mnths.

I don't have any leaks getting on the alternator, in fact the one I just replaced looked brand new(re manufactured). Thats another reason why I'm leaning towards heat. That last one lasted about 3 weeks and two of the weeks I didn't have a heat shield on my tubular o2 housing.

I just put in another orielly one that will hopefully last at least another 3 weeks when I'll get my saturn alternator. Relocating the alternator is worst case scenario, my hour ride back from college was so nice with the cold AC on a 95* day.

The saturn alt holds up a thousand times better either way. I had one go bad on me last year (after 3 years or so of use) and put a new one on last summer (this time i kept the plastic shield on it that had broken off the previouse one - i had to modify to keep it) But this one is doing great, 14.1 - 14.2 volts pretty much all the time, revving to the moon and no damage as well as having my DP right next to it, a tubular cast manifold and a wastegate dump going past it, and i run a LOT of accessories and it just keeps chugging, The best addition to this mod is to mount a new junction block off the battery to draw your power for accessories from and send the signal for the alt from this block, = much more stable and higher average volts

For you guys going to o'reiily for a warranty alternator, THEY DON"T CARE WHAT ALT THEY GIVE YOU AS A REPLACEMENT FOR YOUR BAD DSM ONE>>>>GET THE SATURN ONE FOR FREE!!!!!!!! I DID (hope that's plain enough for ya'll LOL )
