So the cheap 20g that came on my car when I bought it finally decided to start acting up. In short the WG managed to jam itself open so I'm making 1psi tops at WOT. I checked that the actuator worked (it does), the problem is with flap inside. The shaft that attaches to the end of the actuator arm slides in and out of the hot side. So It's either new turbo (best option) or weld it shut and run an external WG (more cost efficient). Is it safe to drive at this point (I mean with the exhaust just constantly venting) until I get the spare change?

I took the actuator off and confirmed it works, shaft that comes out of the hotside of the turbo and connects to the actuator arm slides in and out about 1/2 inch so that is the part that is messed up.
 
Just out of curiosity what would make it run rich, this was my first thought. If the ECU is only adding fuel according to what the air flow the MAF see's then it should stay at an even ratio no?
 
It will run rich but will run as long as you dont try to beat on it it should be ok. if the flapper is getting jammed it probaly needs a bushing .

You wont run rich with the WG open all the time. Since the turbo isnt spooling up, its not gonna draw much air through the MAS. Its like any other off boost driving conditions.
OP, you would be fine until you figure out what you are going to do about fixing this problem. The car wont have much go, but its certainly drivable..

OP You will be perfectly fine like that. No issues.
 
I ran my daily driver like that for about 6 months because I was too poor to fix it. It will be slow as christmas because the compression is to low to run efficiently w/o boost (especially a 1g since the compression is 7.8-1 instead of the 2g's 8.5-1) It will be fine.

I was not complete in my thinking that it was not going to spool my bad.:confused:
the "flapper bushing" is no more that a metal bushing welded into the exhaust housing . where i live we have to get creative to keep our cars alive while waiting on the ups man.

Didn't matter if it spooled or not. Its still not going to run rich.

I understand what he meant, the thought was that if the turbo spools but the engine sees no boost then you will run rich, kind of like if you blew off an IC pipe.

Entirely different.. with a MAF car, when you blow a coupler off after the MAF you are leaking metered air. So it is injecting fuel for the air it's expecting but not received due to the leak.

When you wire a wastegate open on an otherwise properly functioning SD or MAF car it will just not add any more fuel than what it needs to hit it's target AFR

That's what I was getting at. dsmgst1996's original thought was flawed, but I understand what he was thinking.
