S2000 Cluster Swap

It will be done when its done. Its a project car... Not a daily driver. Give him time.

My comment was just to ask about the status of this unique project, see how he is doing, bump his thread a lil bit. It wasn't a stab to force him to finish it tomorrow.

I know its a project car? I was just looking for an update like everyone else subscribe to this thread.

anyways OP and chance of a DIY write up? i am very interested as i have access to an s2k cluster

Drew

Is there a chance, yes, however I'm not sure. I had a very very VERY good document done up to document all the wiring of the the 2G cluster and the S2000 cluster. I spent quite a bit of time figuring out the 2G wiring. Then my HDDs crashed on my lap top and I lost it all.
When I get the dash board back to my house again I might just start it all over again but it will depend on how busy I am.

I also want to buy a new cluster as this one is a bit banged up, I then plan to have that cluster reprogrammed so it will match the mileage on my OEM 2G cluster.

EDIT: No need to buy a new cluster, looks like I might be able to get the lens assembly from Honda. Have a friend looking into it for me.

^This. Thanks.
I'd love to have this done but the car is an hour and a half away so it's hard for me to get out there to work on it with all the other crap going on in my life (school, dog, gf, work, gym, etc).

I'm going to pull the car from the dash again in a few weeks as I want to redo the wiring and wrap it in PET sleeve plus I want to add some other things.

I love that you include man's best friend as big responsibility!! Keep at it man!

Oh, it looks really cool, I like the idea.

Not sure if you are interested but there is carbon fiber vinyl tape stuff. The stuff I have is like 4" wide, and there's a long roll of it. If you can do something with the seam (because it looks like you will need about 8" strip), you could use one stripe on top of the other in the cluster. It could hide blemishes and might look decent.

Something like this:

carbon - Google Search

Oh, and looks like you can get it much wider.

I had picked mine up from Advance Auto Parts a few years ago, just because I had never seen it before and thought it might be useful to cover up something small that had some cosmetic damage (fuel door or something flat like that). I've never found a use for it yet. The stuff I bought was really cheap ($9?), I'm sure the 4" width has everything to do with the lower price.

Off topic

I was looking at a strip of rear view mirrors like that, but was worried about bright lights. There's no way to flip it in case someone behind you has brights on or anything is there? And have you driven the car with that on, and how is it working out? You love it?

And finally a comment about the gauges replacing the center air vents. How do you survive in that black car with black dash in the summer. Good lord that must be hot. :)

He's still young so he takes up a considerable amount of my time but I love him.

I'm not sure what I will do about finishing around the cluster. I likely won't use CF as I have no other cf stuff in the car.

The Wink has never given me problems with brights or anything.

The car has no AC, hasn't for a while but it doesn't get super hot here.

Nice project, keep up the good work.

I would like to see your rite up..:thumb:

Thanks.
We'll see on the write up. As I said, I lost the excel spread sheet I had made with all the wiring pin outs when my HDDs crashed on my lap top a while back. I might go back through the harness so we'll see.

Well hurry up! haha

You can't do something as cool as this and then just leave us all hanging in suspense (at least me).

I'd love to have it done trust me but I just finished school and I'm trying to land a new job now so that's more important. I don't know if I'll be working in the province or going away just yet.

A write up would be great, but even if you dont go through the harness again, at least shoot us some tips and tricks. I saw the converters you used, looks like about $300 just to convert the 3 signals. Then a cluster and I would change the background colors, so at least a $500 mod. Sound about right? Good luck on the job hunt, and get back with whatever info you have when you can. I may get into this at the end of summer. ( I graduate college in May and will be starting my own ground up tsi awd build.)

I'll see what I can do about the wiring diagram.

It's not cheap to do this conversion at all. For changing the background colors, Qube Engineering makes and LED kit that is very nice; my plan is to get one eventually.

Yeah. I've had my AP2 cluster sitting in a drawer for a while.

I'm a little confused as to the need for converting the signal. Isn't the 2G OBD2? I've seen honda guys throw OBD2 Bike clusters in their cars and only needed to do the adaptation of the harness. No needing converters and what not.

Anyway I'm interested. I wanna see how much this will cost first.

Any other updates toward this swap? I will pay for those blueprints! Haha

The harness is all taped up and wrapped in braided sleeving so I'm not taking it apart, sorry. If you really want to do this get a wiring diagram for your year of DSM and your year of S2000 cluster. It's really not too hard to figure out.

It all has to do with the sensors.
The S2000 cluster is looking for a much higher pulse rate on the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) for the speedo then our DSMs (or other Hondas) put out, hence the need for the Speedohealer.

The Coolant temp works different too (I can't remember exactly how because it's late) but that's why you need to convert that.

The tachometer, DSMs have a different PPM (pulse per minute) then most other 4 cylinders out there. The Autometer box corrects this.

Lastly and I only got this figured out recently; we need a 100k ohm pot to fine tune our fuel gauge level. Since the S2000 sender and DSM sender send out different ohms values we need to correct it. An adjustable pot makes this nice and easy.

So is this cluster fully working now? It is certainly a cool idea, maybe one day i'll mess around with something similar to this. Got some many things on my plae already, would be a heck of a task to take on.

Good job!

LOL and again ignore my previous (PM). haha. You pretty much answered up my questions here. So these things just wire up and thats it? Or will there need to be like jumper settings on the speedoheader or tach convert or whatever?

And exactly how did you adjust the fuel level? To figure it was correct? Would it be possible to just get a resistor at the proper ohm that your pot is putting out? My main concern is the dial turning, vibration or whatever could effect it. Or say I could do it, use the pot to get it set right, and then test the pot to get the right ohm to pickup a resistor with the right ohm load. Thoughts?

Like I said I'm gonna start ordering those things, minus the pot since I already have one right here on my desk.

PM'd you back.
The Autometer box has no adjustment so it's simple.
The Speedohealer and Modifry ECT converter need some programming but that's fairly simple and covered on there websites.
The ECT convert does need to be hooked up to a computer with a serial to usb cable to program it but it's not hard.

The pot, I only just found out about so I haven't tested it. You certainly could measure the resistance and then pick up a resistor once it fine tuned. However, vibration shouldn't be an issue imo.
