Rustoleum Paint Job?

I'm planning on doing a paint job very soon, and I'm wondering if I could paint the whole thing with Rustoleum? I think I may have seen someone do it before, but I was just seeing if anyone had experience with it such as prep work, if primer is still necessary, sanding in between coats, how many coats, and if it would be easier to by spray cans or gallons of it, because I have access to a spray gun. Thanks

You could. It may look okay, at best. But there's reasons "automotive paint" is formulated differently from "paint that isn't automotive paint".

Ok, I just wanted to do something cheap and easy, and I was hoping Rustoleum would look a little bit better, or a little glossier, than just flat black.

Then use satin or semi-gloss black.

While I was at tech I seen a couple of trucks that were completly painted with bedliner. I had to do a double take a couple of times to realize what they used to paint..But It looked fantabulous....I have also heard of people painting the cars with rollers. Seen it done once.. Looked great the parson did it really well..

And I have seen the roller method but from what I understand it takes very long because of all the coats and sanding in between you have to do.

I painted my faded wing with Plasticoat gloss black it came out a lot better than I thought and I didn't even take my time. I'm going to sand it and get a better coat on.

yes i did the paint job myself. it was a learning experience more than anything. trial and error, but not too much error. after taking the body kits off found lots of rotted holes etc.

i did not get crazy with it. all i did was stripped everything i can off lights taillights bumpers covers ect. anything that came off i took off.. fixed any small holes with bondo. then i wet sanded the whole car with 320 gritt sandpaper till it was nice and dull and got off all the defective clear coat. primed it with my spreay gun and sprayed it black. i mixed 50/50 paint and acetone. after a week wet sanded the whole car with 1500 gritt sand paper then buffed it out with a high speed buffer used 3m stuff

For those who have done this paint job, is there a clear coat that I could use on this paint without making a horrible reaction?

i tried looking all over. there is no clear coat that i have found that we could use. i looked everywhere. maybe someone found something?

Do not use Rustoleum, it its not meant for car bodies, do it with a better paint, spray paint is most likly better.

Ive seen i done on a few trucks and it didn't come out to bad.paintforcars sells a paint kit from $160 to about $175 plus shipping depending on what clear you want and all.If you have the gun id save up a few bucks and do it the right way.But if you cant get the money then anything is better then primer

I have been painting cars for several years. I agree as well, don't use Rustoleum. The paint does not have the additives for the enviromental conditions and will break down quicker. You already have a spray gun, save up a little and get some automotive paint. To get good results you will have a decent amount of time sanding and prepping the car. Using inferior products could lead to peeling and molting, then you would have even more time in it correcting it. At a minimum, most autopart stores have the Duplicolor paints in quarts and gallons and will be better suited. Be sure to use a sealer for going over your old paint.

I agree, don't use Rustoleum... For the price, you will probably have more money into the Oleum than you would in automotive paint... Go to your local autobody and paint store and ask them if they have anything old in stock. Sometimes you can get mistints, over stocks, etc for really good prices. Also, alot of the time they will have a "stock color" selection of pre-engineered colors, not custom mixes.

For example, I just painted my truck with PPG Base clear Metallic Midnight Blue for 55.00 pre gallon. They were demo'ing a new clear system, so they gave me a gallon to test out for free. Painted my truck for under 75.00 (obviously anyone who has painted knows about the other additional costs involved) I also just painted my utility truck with PPG acrylic enamel that I was able to get for 40.00 a gallon. I bought two gallons and have another paint job on the shelf.

Make friends with the paint shop guys and ask for stock colors and see if they have anything you can use on the "shelf" in the back.

Oh, and if you're a little more flexible on color choice you can get REALLY cheap paint...

When you paint using PPG stuff, do the majority uses positive air masks so when they'r shooting isocynates paints to prevent accidently breathing in that stuff..esp the clearcoat, which is an isocyanate product?

I don't use a positive pressure mask, just an msa particulate and vapor mask... i think i paid 25 bucks for it and it came with a couple sets of refills... i've painted 3 cars with it so far and it is still on the first set of filters... of course i shoot HVLP with alot less overspray... and walk outside to drink the beers between coats...

We have a local DSMer who rolled his paintjob and it looked like a bunch of orange peel. Looked crappy to say the least.

i have to say, the only way i could see a rolled job looking good would be if you painted it orange and had some sick "tropicana" decals made... JMHO

The determining factor on how a paint job is the prep work. A good bit of the cars today have orange peel, some more severe than others. I would never consider rolling paint on my car, but I have respect for the guys that had good results. To get a good look out of it, you have to wetsand after each coat. Clean everything up and roll another coat on. For how many times the car was rolled and wetsanded, you could probably spray your car 3 times with a gun. Side note, if not using a fresh air system, you'll want a mask that has carbon activated filters in it.
