running with coil not bolted in

Hey guys I am checking out a dsm tonight. Anyways the trans needs work and the coil is in its way out. Anyways I can borrow a friends coil to make sure the engine is running right before I buy it. Anyways could I let the coil hang and not bolt it in to the mount on the engine, or do I have to install it. Ill take the time either way.

It can just sit wherever, it doesn't need to be bolted in to be grounded.

I have my coil bolted to top of the intake using the bolt from the throttle cable holder on driver side. It sits in there pretty steady. Though the short plug cable has a hard time reaching to the coil.
