Running straight from wastegate, only 8 psi?

Burnaby,
I'm having a head-scratcher of a problem. 90 Tsi awd, totally stock with only 140,000 km on it. Only makes 8psi of boost. At first I suspected leaks, did a leak test, it's fine. Then I thought maybe it was pulling boost due to knock etc... Nope, that wasn't the case.

Then I tried disconnecting the BCS and running straight from the J pipe nipple to the wastegate, with the line that normally goes to the BCS feeding into my boost gauge. Still only 8psi.

I've been searching many sites for a while and the general consensus is that the stock wastegate should do 10psi or so left to it's own with no MBC or BCS hooked up.

Here is the issue; if this was a boost leak then my gauge reading directly after the turbo would show 10psi or so, while the reading in the normal spot (FPR solenoid line off the intake manifold) would reflect the leak and be lower, but they're exactly the same leading me to believe I'm not leaking. (that and the boost leak test) Also, it spools very quickly and always stops perfectly at 8psi; I've tried slowly rolling into it, sitting at 5-6psi on the highway and then quickly going WOT, either way it doesn't ever go even a hair past 8psi.

Furthermore, removing the pressure source from the wastegate and preventing it from opening will give me boost above 8psi easily, although I didn't go much past that it did get up to 13 psi before I stopped, so i know at the very least I *can* make that

So, there are two possibilities here that I can't answer: Either the wastegate spring is actually only set to 8psi, or I possibly have a pre-turbo exhaust leak of some kind? Would this make sense?

I guess the third possibility is that i'm missing something basic LOL.

I'm at the point where I am just going to run a MBC, but first i'm waiting for a logger cable so I can confirm that the BCS was simply broken and that the car is healthy, but I don't want to turn up the boost until I know that 8psi is a normal reading with this setup. If i'm supposed to be making 10, something is wrong.

i have a 90 eclipse and i have the same issue. when i stomp on it i boost up to 11psi then it falls back to 8-9psi steady. i have a crappy homemade mbc currently and im getting rid of that!!!

Have you check for boost leaks? If you take off your mbc you should be at stock 12-14psi. Try taking it off and see what happens.

Actually 1st gens are supposed to make around 7-8 psi as where 2g are around 9-10. Just save the headache and get that mbc.

I have a 1992 Talon Tsi, using a 14b and it makes 12 lbs then creeps up to like 16 with the stock wastegate. Quick question for you though , I didnt notice whether or not your running an auto or manual? The auto had the 13g and im sure makes less boost.. If you do have the 14b though, a friend of mine has a 91 N/T with turbo swap and his makes 8lbs on the stock wastegate also.

It's a manual

So you're saying you're making 12lbs, just on wastegate? Or do you still have the BCS or some other form of boost control?

Yes I am running 12 lbs, I have the BCS (Boost control selonoid) removed also. I dont ahve any sort of boost controller hooked up. I have 3" SS exhaust turbo back, and a walbro pump. Those are my only mods.

I also have a 90 tsi awd and had the same problem with it only going to 8 psi with either the bcs or a hose going straight from the outlet pipe to the wastegate actuator, I bought a mbc and set it higher and everything works fine so I just assumed the bcs was stuck open...

Okay, well i'm going to assume your extra 4psi is due to your exhaust and just go buy a boost controller, because everything else seems fine. Maybe the 90/early 91 models had a different spring in the wastegate, who knows. They changed so much stuff over the years it wouldn't surprise me.

My TSI AWD has boost at 12psi. My MBC is in the mail, And my BOV is leaking around 12 psi also and the new bov is in the mail also.

Remember all cars are different no matter what they can all react differently to stuff, I would invest in a mbc i love mine!

the 14b wastegate is only rated for 8 psi. If you connect a hose from the j pipe to the wastegate, that is all you will see. If you have the BCS hooked up and still only see 8psi, the BCS is stuck closed. BCS actually bleeds off boost to the wg so it opens later hence stock boost of 11-12 psi.

Thank you! this is the answer I was looking for. I got so many mixed responses, no one actually seemed to know the actual wastegate pressure. I know my BCS was faulty as I tested it with my multi-meter and it had nearly no resistance between the terminals, way out of spec.
