Hi guys im having a problem with running rich. To start the car has a walbro 255 450 injectors right now I have 550s but they are not in the car. The car has a aeromotive fpr which is set at around 37lbs and has 3 inch straight ss exhaust. I have played with the pressure assuming thats my problem and havent got a straight answer on what the car should be set at. Since instaling the fpr the car has stoped smoking alot but still will blow black smoke when you rev it. Am I crazy and is this normal or is something out of wack:confused:.

that is not normal for it to smoke unless there is an issue, as we all assume there is at this point!
But can you give us some more info on the car, and what you have done to it?

Why did you upgrade to a Wally 255 on a stock car? (for future plans?)
Was there any existing issues before you installed the pump?
Have you check your spark plugs, wires, and coil pack?
Have you Done a Boost leak test?

Hi! Upgraded for future and I got this car as a " its going to the junk if I didnt take it" car and it needed alota work . Long story short the pump that was in it was bad and my buddy had this pump sitting so was a smart easy move. I put a new headgasket in the car unsure if timing is correct BUT im doing a timing belt and all my acc belts this weekend with a new pully set and tensioner as the car has sat for god only knows so I want to start off fresh and know what is in the car. Like i said it has stock 450's but i do have 550 evos that I wanted to put in. I had them in but the car ran way to rich ( this was before i had my fpr) and I took them off. I do not drive this car. I have 3 other cars of which I only drive one. I just like the style and look of this talon and would like to breath new life into it. I removed all the egr and vac crap that was not needed it has no ac no condensor. Let me know if theres anything eles that would help anyone out as far as info on the car goes. I have not done a blt but I am trying to getahold of parts to make one or borrow one. Thanks

Well thats awesome to see you want to take the right path unlike some people! ALWAYS do maintenance first, and thats what your doing!

NOW, you said you ran the 550's for a short while and ran extremely rich! Well my first thought on that is you fouled the spark plugs due to the highly rich mixture you had going on. If you have no way to tune you ecu for the 550's i wouldn't put them in till you do.
So I would go check the plugs to see if they look bad, hell their cheap, just pick up four copper NGK's, gap them, pop them in, and see what happens!
As long has you have the 450's in, and the Fuel Pressure is set around 38psi you shouldn't be running rich unless there is any other exciting problems!

Conclusion:
Do the maintenance as you were, get new plugs, set FP to 38psi w/ the 450s, AND to make sure it may not be an issue, DO A BOOST LEAK TEST!

If you have any amount of metered air escaping before it gets to the combustion chamber, it will run rich! Hints why you should do a boost leak test after doing any work on your car, if you adjust or remove the intercooler piping!

I have a safc2 but it is untuned as I have no clue how to use it and it only get harder when everything is in abreviations. It is hooked up properly im looking to get a egt guage so I can monitor whats important.

Yea I want to do a blt for sure anyways just so I know im good to go. I replaced all the intake gaskets when I had the motor pulled.

I just want to add to this, but it looks like Shawn has this down right, but remember to set the pressure on the AFPR with the vacuum line off of it and your thumb over the hole on the vacuum line to keep your car running. ;)

Very helpful info. I am new to turbo cars but im not new to cars in general.

Ok. I have been adjusting it while the cars running obviously, but without taking the hose off. Why do you need to remove the vac line? my fpr is a Aeromotive 13301 model with guage and ss line. I picked the fpr up for 30 bucks and had to buy all my fittings and line but still was a great deal.

You do this to insure you get an accurate reading on you base fuel pressure! If the diagram in the AFPR is under vacuum then you not getting a true base fuel pressure value, you're getting a base fuel pressure under vacuum!
