My 1996 TSI AWD is running rich and idling funny. When I hit boost, I can sometimes smell gas and there is a relatively thick layer of soot on the muffler. I do not have a datalogger. I am running the stock turbo, and turboback exhaust with no cat. What could be some of the cuplrits? I have searched and haven't found much.
Also, idle is a little rough. When I start up it idles at 1k, and when I drive for about 10 minutes it creeps to 1.5k and sits there while I am sitting at a light. I can rev the car and the idle will fall back down to 1k again, but will idle at 1.5k when I get to the next light. Is this idle surge? It doesn't osolate too much or really fast. WTF

just run down the basic test with this one till you find your problem.
1 boost leaks
2 general tune up wires, plugs and etc.
3 check the tb and make sure it is not damaged and etc...
4 check out the site vfaq.com for the idle page on how to test your tb's isc, tps, and etc..

other than that go throught all that and come back sounds like it could be in the tb but could be as stupid as a vacum line that came off.

having no cat will alow more carbon to get out of the exhaust
do what zrk666 said - thats a good place to start

haveing no cat can really do that much to an idle seems kinda Questionable but you might be right.
