I have tried water wetter and full radiator flush and I am still running hot and idling high. I also noticed that when I am driving (and especially when I let off the throttle) there is a high pitched whine coming from the engine bay...

I am thinking this could have something to do with the water pump but I am not sure. There also isn't any A/C it is just blowing hot air.

*I did recently take off the heat shields... could that have that big of an impact? But that still leaves the high pitched whining noise...

How long have you had the front mount I/C installed and did the heat issues coincide with that install?
Have you observed both fans to see when they kick on? Please clarify: Is the A/C still installed, but just blowing hot air? Also may want to check your water temp sending unit as it may be going bad.

Definately sounds like it could be a water pump, reach down below your alternator and see if the pulley will move around, if it doesn't move around try and loosen the belts and see if it will move around then. Your fans are cutting on? Both of them? One should cut on when you run the a/c, does this help with the temp of the car? Could be the water pump those if the belt is "whining" also while you're checking that be sure to check your harmonic balancer, since these cars are getting old they're starting to fail. While I was changing my oil pan I noticed my timing cover cracked due to the harmonic balancer, decided to check it after I read a threat about it.

If you could be a little more specific about the whine, where exactly is it coming from? Any way to post up a video?

EDIT: Also just thought about this: If your belt is whining it may be too loose to turn the pulley for the water pump enough to keep it flowing through hence why you might be overheating. Maybe tighten your belt to get rid of the belt whine? And a video would still work wonders. :)

+1 to above also

The front mount has been on for about a year, and with link I have both fans on which helps a little. The whine is coming from the fuel pump area.

I forgot though, I was in an accident last summer and never got the a/c recharged, so no frion...

I am going to check the belts and let you know.

high pitch whining noise could be a boost leak where there is a gasket(j pipe, throttle body, etc) also check you turbo coolant lines to for your running hot problem
