ok. i have a bone stock gsx auto.

my problem is this...... i bought the car from member here, and put a new timing belt on it, and has been running great for a week now. went to drive the car yesterday, and seen that the temp was fluctuating alot it would go up to 3/4 on the guage while driving, then when i stop, it comes back down to normal. so to be sure it was not the guage, i hooked up my scanner, and the temp goes to 210, then fan kicks on. once it drops back down to 203, the fan shuts off. i have tried both fans hooked up to run all the time, but does not help.

so this morning, i pulled the head, and put new headgasket, t-stat, both coolant sensors, new radiator, flushed the whole system, new water pump,,,,,,,all to no avail.

any one have any other suggestions? please do not tell me to burp the system.

why do the fans come on at 210, and then go off at 203? i thought the fan was suppsed to come on at 185.

i am at a complete loos of possibilities.

on a side note: the only time i see that the coolant in flowing is right before the fans kick on at 210
also, when i feel the lower hose, it is just luke warm

as i wrote above, i thought it might be the guage, so i hooked up my scanner to it, and got correct readings. and it shows that the guage is correct

On 1g's, I believe the thermostat is 192*F...not sure on 2g's. Anyways, it makes no sense for me that the fan "should" come on at 185. Those temperatures seem fine, I'm not sure why your lower hose is only luke warm though.

My guess is air in the system.

Just wait until if and when you put on a FMIC. My temps are reading at 220*ish.

210* Is a pretty acceptable temp... Id say check your thermostat. Also, you said you took the head off and no apparent coolant leaks? Also, try getting a different temp sending unit?

well, i thought something was wrong whaen i read how everyone says that they pu a 180 degree t-stat, but if the fan do not kick on till 110, they what is the point. i was just having a brain fart. actually, the temp was going to 230-240,, but found the problem was the new stant t-stat was no good

Could be the thermastat but I'm gonna say try checking/replacing the temperature sensor located on the thermastat housing, they are $20 I think. My fan wouldn't kick on all the time because mine was bad. Air in the coolant system like someone said is also a good possibility.

Well when i had temp issues, the temp would rise when my car was stationary. The way i could tell it was the tstat is that i check the hose from tstat housing back to radiator and that hose was staying cold even when car was completely warm and i drove for a few minutes. the tstat was not opening all the way preventing the coolant from returning to the radiator to be cooled down. After I replaced the thermostat, problem solved. Well at least temp problems, had a few other leaks elsewhere

with a 180* tstat it starts opening sooner but will be fully open at 180* allowing full coolant flow. when that becomes insufficient (as when you are stationary, and no air is moving through the rad) the fans will kick on at 210* to help move air through the rad. if you have dsmlink you can change the temp in which the fans come on, or have them on full time. Or you can wire them up full time if you dont have dsmlink or arent planning on it.

glad a new t-stat helped. Have you tried running waterwetter? with a fmic blocking all my rad airflow, i was showing 215* at idle and 205* during cruise, with waterwetter added, as well as a new rad cap and coolant system flush, i saw no more than 205* idled (in the worst heat with AC on), and 190* during cruise (had 180* tstat). also had both stock fans on full-time.
