rubbing/griding noise

alright i have a 99gsx i do not hear this noise when giving it gas or accelerating... its only when i let off the throttle and im coasting its not real loud but not real quiet .... ive searched around could it be the my guess is rotors dust cover/shield thats rubbing, wheel bearing maybe, who knows???

i have a 91 gsx and i noticed a rubbing grinding noise also. It also only happens when i let of the gas and am coasting. For its not to loud, sounds more like grinding and comes from the back of the car. I had the same problem with my 95 GS and soon in the future i needed new rear wheel bearings. this is my first 1g so im not sure if its the same problem

ya thats excatly how mine is.... so possibly my wheel bearings.. if the wheel has any play when i jack it up is this a good way to tell?

To check wheel bearings:

Step 1: Jack up your car. (Note: If the bearing is REALLY gone, you don't even have to do this.)

Step 2: Put one hand on top of the tire and one hand on the bottom, like you're going to take your wheel off.

Step 3: Try to wiggle the wheel as if you were trying to take it off. If the lug nuts are tight and the wheel jiggles, your bearing is most likely shot.

I've gone through three of these suckers and am just waiting for number four to go. What really sucks is that if they are seized on the axle splines, the only way to get them off is to cut through the bearing, which ruins the axle, and sometimes the speed sensor. This means that a $50 wheel bearing turns into a pricey issue.

Even then, the only time I ever heard my wheel bearings make any noise, grinding or rubbing, it was during a turn or changing lanes or something; never during straight-line driving.
