I recently did a rebuild on my 91 tsi awd. i bought 6 bolt ross pistons and eagle rods from slow boy. I took my pistons, rods, and block to a place in town to get my rings filed down to .19 and .21. They called me today and said the wrist pins won't go into the rods and the rods have to be honed. I told them i'd call them back. do the rods have to be honed or are the rods or pistons screwed up? i checked the part numbers and everything is 6 bolt. I've never had to hone rods before usually u can roll the pins right in right?

Ross uses a standard size wrist pin. In the 2g application, the wrist pin is larger. Either your pistons were mis-labeled or they were boxed wrong. Have the shop measure the diameter of the wrist pin. 1g should be .827" and 2g should be .866". My guess is that they will measure .866" Since they already honed the rods, the might as well go big enough to fit the pins. If you try to swap pistons now, they will also need to replace the bushings in the rods to fit the .827 pins.

Double check the part # also. 99816 and 99815 is with the .866" pin and 99811 and 99810 is the .827" pin.

I'll have them measure the wrist pin. does anyone know what the inside diameter of eagle rods are supposed to be?

It's not like they don't fit completely ### they'll start in the bushing a little bit and that's about it.

I ran into the same problem on a motor that was built a while ago. Turned out the eagle rods small ends were not sized properly. It's not uncommon to find each and every eagle rod big/small end out of spec. I'd have them all checked over and resized if need be.

so should i have them hone them out or call slowboy and see if I can get new ones?

same thing happened to me on my rebuild. The machine shop has to fit the piston to the rods. The specs for that clearance are in the paper work the rods came with. I think the clearance is like .0009 to like.0012. That is off the top of my head but it sounds right to me. The pins should go it kind of easy or just give them a lite tap in. Thats it
