Rim lip oxidation

Ok, so the stock rim lip on my laser are starting to develop this rough crap on them... it looks kinda like oxidation, or rust or something, but it is gray. Every laser I have seen with my wheels has some form of this. Does anyone know how to remove this?

Yeah, that's oxidation and stuff from weathering and age. The aluminum has a clear coat on it to protect it and thats what happens. (It's especially bad in Minn where they use all sorts of salt on the roads.) You can have it professionally managed, or if you are good, you can sand/steel wool it off and re-clearcoat those areas.

I had the saem problem, I used everything from CLR to Aircraft paint stripper... no dice. I think I'm just going to sand it off.

crap... so if I sand this, i'm going to need to recoat it to prevent rust? What type of clear coat should I use to hold up and not crack like the crap thats on there???

I wouldn't call it crap that's on there... It did what it was supposed to do (You have to remember, these are older cars..) And on a daily driven car, your tires and wheels get a taste of everything that is on the road (chemicals, salt, grime, dirt).. These things wear out, just like paint on a car eventually does.. Sand, and some clear coat (might want to do hi temp, depending on how hot your wheels get from the rotors heating up in the general area.)
