91 Talon AWD turbo 5 speed. I searched but nothing was found. Putting car in reverse- it grinds if you hold it back when disengaging clutch,if I let go of shifter it backs up the pops out. I adjusted cables but didnt help. Is 1rst and reverse on thesame sinchro? First is fine but reverse isnt. Anyone help?Im thinkinking reverse gear is screwed. And 5th gear is fine no problems with it

My Father's Laser had the same problem. He just ignored it and after about a week, it started popping out in all gears. Yet he continued driving it because he was working 12 hour shift, 7 days a week. After about two weeks from the time the initial problem begin, the transmission totally died. Wouldn't go into any gear. And there was a slice where something had cut throught the transmission case on the passenger side of the vehicle. Needless to say, he needed a new transmission, which he got and I installed after going through this vfaq, for shifter movement fix.

The new transmission checked out okay. However, this was not the case with the bad one. I took the end cover off of it and found that it was jam packed tight with little 1/8" by 1/4" pieces of metal. They looked like teeth off of a gear or something. Also, the retaining nut that hold the gear(s) in was finger loose.

I know the vfaq only talks about popping out of 5th gear, but my Dad's started just like yours, popping out of reverse only.

Oh and reverse doesn't have a synchronizer. Make sure the fluid level is good too. Maybe put the car in nuetral and let the clutch out then give it some gas. Then try to put it in reverse and see if is still grinds. Grinding when trying to put it in reverse could also mean that your clutch is not fully disengagingn, but that would not explain it popping out of gear.
