Been searching and seeing about a 50/50 response on reusing a Cometic headgasket. Motor had 270 miles on it before I had to take the head off. Some say if using copper spray it'll be fine? It's not blown or abused.

Any official word on this? it seems all the threads just kind of died out.

The ideal solution would be to use a new HG but as long as you have cleaned the head and block mating surface extremely well, use copper spray, and torque the headstuds in the right sequence and to the right torque amounts then you will be fine. Remember it is also recommended to retighten the headstuds after a heat cycle.

I have reused a low-mileage Cometic before without any problems. I would say your safe with that mileage.

"As long as the gasket has not seen a heat cycle, it is okay to reuse it. Let me know if there are any other questions."

Hi. I just torqued down the head on my 97 mitsubishi eclipse gst and forgot
to mod the oil port in the head. Was wondering if i could reuse your mls
head gasket?
Thanks.

Of course Cometic is going to tell you that so they can sell you a new gasket. I have seen many be reused with over 500 miles and no problems at all.

Hey, im just telling what they said. Wether theyre just trying to sell another gasket or not. Its always best to go with the manufacturer's info first. If you call TiAL we wont BS you. Yes we will try to sell you a bigger better turbo but we give you the straight stats too...

They are both metal headgaskets. You can't reuse a regular composite type headgaskets because they crush upon first torque down.

what i was trying to say was that theirs two types of cometic HG the one thats $80 and the $240 "MLS"

what are the diffrence between those 2?

Never heard of two different cometic head gaskets. If its a metal head gasket that ISN'T a composite crush type then yes you can reuse it. There is only ONE head gasket for our cars on cometic's site. Do you have a link to the other $240 one?

OH MY BAD i made a big boo boo LOL

As long as you have arp's i reuse them all the time never had one go bad, i dont like the use of copper spray on any dsm head application. Also i dont retorque head bolts arp doesn't call for it and why would it change, i think it causes more problems than good, just go over in correct sequence 30-50-80 and then back to middle and hit them all again as once you torque the outside the inside change and i have never had any dsm headgasket problems on ###### 10 times on my veichle and another 6 or 7 of buddies.
