Results in tinting my tail lights black(pics inside)

I performed a slight coat over my front factory fogs (trust me, I use these for "looks" only, LOL! ) yesterday, and wanted to share a tip with my fellow DSMers.

For some strange reason, I found that no matter how thinly I sprayed my lenses, they invariably dripped......

At first, I thought it was that the ambient temps. were too cold - it was around the mid 50s here in Cleveland yesterday, out of the sun - but then I got to thinking some more as only ONE of my two lenses had this particular problem.

Well, it just so happened that the one lens which had this problem was one that I had cleaned/polished.

Looks like what had happened was that I had made the surface of the plastic/glass so smooth by polishing it with a Dremel that it left no surface for the paint to grab on to - thus causing the streaking/dripping.

After a bit of "rough" dry-sanding with some high-grit paper (I used 600 grit, then cleaned everything off with some isopropyl alcohol), the problem was cured.

:thumb:

I think that when I do my rear ambers, I'm going to do a bit of "rough sanding" first, too.

LOL, yes and no.

Actually, I had thought that my rather coarse "buffing" of the OEM lens would have done the trick - I just did it too well, I guess, and left nothing for the paint to stick on to. LOL!

As for sanding before painting, with the NightShades, through different posts here and on-line elsewhere, whether or not any prepping of the surface is required or even necessary has been a topic of countless debates.

I want to black out my taillights...all but where the light bulbs are at
I have talon taillights from a 1995, I really am thinking that the nightshades deal might be a little bit of a hassle...and dull.

I was thinking I could take apart the taillights and spray the inside black where I want it black...but before I go ripping apart my tails...is this even possible?

can you take them apart like that or are they permanently stuck together and what not inside.

anyone who knows please help.
thanks!

it is possible to take them apart. it's rather delicate but i agree. i wouldn't advise it because if ya break'em, you gotta replace'em.

They would still be red on the outside even if you painted the inside. I saw a guy that got his sprayed with a light coat of your basic black automobile paint... looked like Nightshades, but WAY glossier.

Im glad you posted this question, because I wanted to do the same to my lights.:thumb: Ive read about others heating up the adhesive holding the light together, and carefully prying them apart for paint. If moisture is the only factor hold this project back, wouldnt some basic silione sealant prevent that? I wanted to get the 'euro' taillights, take em apart, then spray the inner piece red to match my car. That way, the clear outer piece keeps it glossy, but transparent for the actual red color to be seen. ... any1 with me here??

I painted my ricer taillights red. It looks better than the chrome that it use to have. i used a hair dryer to take them apart. I'll post some pics tomorrow

a local civic smoked his tail lights and it didnt look dull or bad or any thing because he did a few things..
Wet sanded after applying niteshades than applied clearcoat
and it looks very good and OEM (by oem i mean pro and like it was there from factory)

if you take your time and have a screwdriver its easy then when your done painting them just resilicone the seal and you wont for up ive done it like three times with no problems so go for it

I found these guys here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=120146222668&rd=1 and want to know if there are any blacked out tail lights available for 1g that aren't like the Matrix carbon fiber here http://www.matrixracing.com/p-2893-90-94-mitsubishi-eclipse-euro-altezza-carbon-fiber-generation-2-tail-lights.aspx
Maybe I could paint over the carbon fiber? I would rather just buy something already done when it comes to something like that...anyone know of any others I would appreciate letting me know

Im not feelin' them. I think the spacing between the actual lights in the housing look out of place on our cars, the only time I even remotely like "altezza's" or "euro" or whatever they are being called today is when the lights are clustered close together.

Did you read the fine print? That auction doesn't come with the center reflector, but you can PM me if you're interested in a full set. :thumb: Also make decisions based on what you like not what others like. I promise you'll be much happier with your car.

On a completely unrelated subject Spike's "Chick Bang Boom" commercials rock! :rocks:
