[RESOLVED] What would happen by putting an AWD flywheel on a FWD?

I know someone thats having some problems with their clutch install right now, and they think it might be the flywheel.

They've got a 7 bolt 2g Talon TSI, and I sold him my Fidanza flywheel I bought off a guy here on tuners that was supposed to be a 7 bolt FWD flywheel, as I decided against doing a clutch overhaul on my car for the time being.

I know the difference between the two is that the AWD flywheel is supposed to be about an inch smaller. Other than that though, is there any distinctions between the AWD and FWD Fidanza flywheels or do they look exactly the same?

I read on here about an AWD guy who put a FWD flywheel on, and his started grinded like hell or something of the nature. His problem is that the starter isn't even touching the flywheel. This sounds kind of odd. All the holes match up perfectly with his stock flywheel. Any help would be much much appreciated. Thanks guys.

I already know the AWD flywheels total diameter is supposed to be about 1" smaller, but by the sounds of it, they'll bolt right up on either. They just wont work properly. Correct?

It's odd that all the bolt holes line up perfectly, yet the starter doesn't touch it. I've looked at a bunch of fidanza flywheel pictures, and all of them look the same, which leads me to believe that the outer teeth are what would have a problem coming in contact with something not the starter.

Yes it would be possible to bolt up. Does that mean it will work?

no:)

I meant completely, not half assed, but thanks anyways for the sarcasm. Most helpful.

Anyways, I just got an email back from Fidanza, and they stated the following:

The difference between the two flywheels is the ring gear. The ring gear on the AWD flywheel has 106 teeth. The FWD flywheel has 110 teeth.

Also, there will be a serial number etched into the flywheel with a hand etcher. The AWD flywheel will say "MIT3 - XXXX" and the FWD flywheel will say "MIT1 - XXXX".

That there solves the problem, as I remember it saying "MIT3" on the back.

The starter will just spin. I know from experience.

It will bolt right up but then you will have to take your transmission BACK out AGAIN for the fourth time to put the right flywheel in. I mixed up my AWD flywheel with my FWD flywheel one time when I was having tranny problems. The starter will not engage the teeth on the flywheel. Good luck, Keith.

i agree i am going through this right now i have a 90 laser fwd turbo m/t and i think the previous owner installed an awd flywheel well i bought a new starter for it and it jus sits and spins off of the end of the flywheel it will not engage the teeth on my starter seem like they are too big

ok guy i trying to figure out what type of flywheel i should get? But i was woundering if it matters if you put a turbo 2wd flywheel in a non-turbo 2wd trans? basically i need a flywheel and i need to know if ill run into any problems if i get a turbo flywheel ? Please help :bawling::bawling::bawling:

I could barely read what you said for one, but no. They are different engines/transmissions. A turbo flywheel will not work on your nt.

I HAD A 92 TALON FWD N/T AND MY STOCK FLYWHEEL HAD 106 TEETH. I BOUGHT A FLYWHEEL FROM FIDANZA THAT HAD 106 TEETH AND AFTER THE INSTALL FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS A AWD FLYWHEEL!!!! IT GROUND A HOLE IN MY TRANNY BEACAUSE IT WAS 2 DEEP. I TOLD THEM AND THEY BLAMED IT ON ME!A!! I WAS PISSED

couldn't you techinically just swap the starters or the starter teeth to make it work? Or is it too big for the FWD case?

can you put a fwd fly on a awd?

fwd flywheel in an awd, teeth hit the bellhousing

awd flywheel in a fwd, all clears, but starter won't engage the flywheel

starters are the same, it's the actual bellhousing design that's different so swapping starters won't do anything.

1g nt flywheels are non-stepped like the turbo's but are the same diameter as an awd, cannot use any turbo flywheel in an nt trans

cannot use any "turbo flywheel" in a 2g nt as they are different motors completely.

An awd flywheel will not work on a fwd transmission. I have a 95 gst and

accidentally bought an awd flywheel for my fwd car. Didn't know there was a

difference in size and put it all together to her my starter just free spinning. The awd

does have 106 teeth and the fwd has 110. Its about an 1/8 difference in diameter

between the two( eyeballing the sizes from above not accurate). The awd being

the smaller flywheel. If your doing a clutch and you want to put on a lighter flywheel

make sure you count that ring gear or you'll be in for double the work. Trust Me!!!!

I know for a fact, that a n/t 4g63 flywheel/clutch will work in an AWD car. It won't hold much power, but it will bolt in/disengage/engage/starter catches.
