First of all I would like to invite rather then differ those of you that wanna post how its not worth it and I wont finish. O did I mention Im going off to college in 2 weeks and MUST get done... Ok well I bought a running and driving 1995 Talon AWD for $2500, dont ask I just did. I am planning on swapping the drivetrain to that and converting my GST to GSX.Then I am going to make the TALON FWD. I will have a short time, but will sell the talon for the same price or more then I bought it for. SOOOO basically with a crap load of work I AM GETTING PAID TO DO AN AWD SWAP!:thumb: Im going to periodically post up some pictures. The pictures will show things I have completed. I dont like to stop once I get started.

The reason I am posting is because I am doing this in parts and want some opionions from you guys to see if I should tweak my plan. Que to those that have completed the swap

1st... pull everything up front off the Talon Tranny, tranfercase, driveshaft, cv axles... So that its still a rolling chassis
2nd swap the tranny, cv axles, transfercase, into my car and drive around as FWD with AWD tranny for a bit, like a couple days.
3rd. Now I have 2 cars ... 1 with a awd tranny and fwd rearend and 1 with a fwd tranny and AWD rearend. I am going to plan on being outa commision for 3-4 days on this one. Ergo swapping the rearends suspension and gastanks.
4th I have 2 running an driving cars now both FWD but the GST needs a driveshaft... Take drill the welds on the driveshaft support and get it professionally welded onto my frame...

WALA!!! AWD SWAP!! this is a EXTREME oversimplicifation of the process, but I just want some opinions and In 2 weeks hopefully Ill post up finished pics!!

I know my grammer sux thanks for asking :)

yup... I did it! I can look out my window and see the nasty Talon thats FWD now!! I just got back from the 1/8 mile got a 8.7 at 83 mph :thumb: AWD FTW!!! and now I'm going to gell the FWD Talon... AWD to FWD isnt really that hard if anyone needs to know anything about the conversion for some odd reason or is doing something like me lemme know!!!

Was there a lot of fab for the rear end. I saw a video of a guy who converted a mirage to an evo5. The hardest part was rear end fab. I was actually considering buying a mirage and pulling the drive train from my gsx and making an evo5 out of it but i don't think I can handle the fab work. It would be cool if you posted a walkthru for the conversion.

for the AWD conversion there was acually less fab work over the FWD conversion. The FWD needed extra bolts for the gas tank and for the AWD it was a couple drop in bolts. O if anyone can find a site that uploads multiple pictures at a time lemme know I have like 40 pictures of the AWD and FWD swap! As for a Mirage if its anything like my swap get a donor car and save a week to work on it and it shouldnt be that hard

I'd defently like to see the pics if you upload them. Photobucket.com allows you to upload like 20 pics at a time. I keep thinking harder & harder about the awd swap (to the point where I'm putting off buying parts that are fwd specific). I don't mind my car as a DD'er (as I don't race on the street) but it really sucks at the track.

Er, the Mirage AWD swap isn't exactly 'easy' by any stretch of the imagination. There's pictures and an explanation of the process up on turbomirage.com but the guy is going to be selling DVDs and a how-to kit at some point in the future. Apparently the entire rear end needs suspension refabbing at the very least, and a whole bunch of other work. Even if the 89-92 were built on the same chassis as the Lancer, it's unfortunately not a drop-and-swap bolt-on kind of endeavour, like the 2G AWD swap.

Only know this as I wanted to do it to my Mirage. :D

I finally got the pics on Photobucket... the address is samnumba1 - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting lemme know if the site doesnt work Ill post up some highlights of the swap!

I would have thought that you would have problems with the floor pans but I guess not.
Unlike 1G's, 2G's share the same floor pans.

I would guess that the biggest PITA part about samnumba1's swap was attaching those FWD gask tank mounts to the AWD car. I imagine that placement was tough to get right. I would hate trying to fixate a GST gas tank under a GSX.

i'm glad i found this thread and i hope to do much the same... sorry if i am hijacking it...

i love my gs-t, but after driving my friends wrx i crave awd. i've been looking for a 2g tsi awd/gsx car that i could get cheap, that has a good drive train, and anything i'd need for a swap. i was wondering, realistically how hard it would be to do the swap, and what kind of time would be necessary? and i have also been looking for a 6bolt, and hopefully will find one on the cheap locally. my ultimate goal is a 6bolt awd 2.b gen eclipse hopefully with +/-400hp. i currently drive the eclipe daily, but i am probably gonna buy a beater, as i am already putting to much money in the gst to abuse it like i do. i don't really care about the donor car after i use what i need and will part out what i can and junk the rest. i should also add i work at a machine shop, so custom fabbing small things is no problem. as daren said i am thinking about it more and more, and i am starting to not buy things fwd specific...

so what all is needed from the awd donor? just the awd tranny , drive shaft, gas tank and rear end? does it all use the same rear suspension components?

what needs custom fabbed?.. you make it sould as if there's nothing?(drive shaft mount?)

did you do the entire conversion with just jack stands?
