My Fiance and I have decided that we would like to get a DSM as our next car, myquestion is which one should we get? Obviously AWD,and I want an Auto so that she can drive it too (she loves going fast just as muchs me) and becasue of the Chicago traffic and winters, but not sure if we should go 1G or 2G. From what I've read the 1G 90-92 comes with the stronger 6 bolt motor and the the 1G BOV is better. Are there any downfalls to the 1G? Any comments or opinions are greatly appreceated!

P.S. please don't flame me becasue of such a newb question, I did use search and went through the FAQ and didn't see anything, and on my short breaks here at work Idon't have alot of time to search through all the posts.

The only real down fall with the 1g is the fact that most people think its ugly compared to a 2g. Also, the 1g is going to be older and - in most cases - higher mileage, and more beat on.
With the 2g its actually pretty rare for the 7 bolt to crankwalk. And it doesn't affect the 1g's with the 7 bolt, so honestly any 1g will be good.
If you are going for tons of power in the future, I'd go with the 1g, preferably with a 4 bolt rear end. But if you don't plan on modding much, I'd go with the 2g because they look nicer and are smoother and more comfortable.

1g in my opinion are more classic. Like was said the 1g is going to have alot of maintenance, just because of all the mileage. Non abused 1g are hard to come by at least out here in NJ.

look heres what u got to think about if u want to get a new motor go with a 1g. 2g are hard to get an cost more money ive got a 2g an thats my next step finding someone that will build a 2g an not the 1g that goes in the 2g but as for the bov u are going to change ## pipes on it so u can goto the junk yard an get a 1g bov or go buy an aftermarket one thats the same thing an as u know the difference with talon an eclipse even tho there the same vehicals ## going to have a problem with vin items on the talon an factory recall stuff an on talons nobody wants to work on em even tho there the exact same as eclipse.
but other than that i lost track of the topic an forgot what it was so im out

^^ Would it be possible for you to use complete and literate sentences next time you make a post?

1g if you want to mod your car and don't have a big budget.
2g if you want a nice car to drive, or to mod if you have a bigger budget.

This is a 'little' biased, but I'd go with the 2G. Again, I say biased because I have one and love it. But the 2G's are not hard to come by. As far as looks go, it's up to you and what pleases your eye. My wife likes the 2G's much more. As far as the technical aspects, there's pros and cons to each. The 2G 7bolt 4G63 is prone to crankwalk, even the automatics. Not all, but you'll find many victims to it. I know because my automatic just crankwalked two months ago and I'm putting a 6 bolt in it now. The 2G automatic trannys are stronger than the 1G's. The suspension on the 2G handles better in my opinion. I don't know if you have any plans for going to the track, but the 1G due better on a strip whereas the 2G is great on a autocross style course. As far as the BOV goes, the 1G is better than the 2G. However, as someone mentioned above, if you change your intercooler pipes (which you should) you'll have other options available to you. Or you could still use the 1G. So, depending on how much you have for your budget, you can a long way with your DSM. A lot of this was about the pros of the 2G, I realize that. But it's a great car. So, consider the 6 bolt swap and check out Import Performance Transmissions for automatic transmission upgrades.

Which body style do you like the most? Cost and personal preference are big deciding factors on the two different generations. Personally, I like both styles but I like the 2G's styling slightly better.

Ok so it souds like a 2G for the stronger AT trans and the looks and most likely lower miles. Are there any desirable years or years to say away from? I don't need it right away so if there is anything particular that I should look for I can be picky. And thanks alot to everyone for their input!

if its just going to be your daily driver, which it sounds like, then i would go 2g just for more comfort..but i do still love the 1g for modding

if you gona share the car you might as well get a 2g they are more roomy and more comfortable, plus get a manual man, and teach your fiance how to drive it its not that hard (well it will be hard on the clutch), because once u realize the power this cars make you want to fix it more and more, plus you gona regret it if you dont get a manual.

I own one of each. I love them both for different reasons; however, my 2g is the love of my life.

The 1g has more of a "driver" feeling to me. I like the 1g interior better. But the 2g is gorgeous... inside and out. I don't know.

Find a good deal, prepare for some maintenence and have fun.

The 97 to 99 are the most sought after years by a margin, cosmetically. The 95 AWD is the car I'd personally go after. We have emissions to deal with here in PA. Most places don't have an AWD dyno so it's just a visually and a quick idle test for the 95's. I disagree with the 2g having a stronger transmission. It is going to be hard to find a nice 1g awd auto with low miles though. Are you planing on modifying the car intensively?

get a 2g because their sexy as hell and then get a 6 bolt and build it and put a big ol turbo on it..

This should be in the Hangout.

1G's always catch my eye when I'm driving around. I would try to find a 99 GSX with no mods! They're out there. :p

as far as mods go I will start out with the stage1 stuff then save a few hundred a month and mod as budget permits. So the popular vote is a 2g later the year the better, is the eprom ecu from the 95 a big deal? if the major differences after 95 are body, she like the body kits anyways so most of the exterior will be replaced.

No body kit will ever look better than a 2gb, period.

As far as what year to look for, everything is about the same. Buy a '99 if you can, they are the rarest and have the sexy all black interior.

Eprom ecu is only important if you want to run dsmlink or have chips burnt. '95's are also supposed to be the year that crank walks most. Crankwalk is way over rated by the way.

im looking for a 2g now to and the ones that really catch my eye are the 99's because of the interior is sooo sexy plus the 97-99s are the best lookin car ever
