[RESOLVED] Decided on a DSM, Now which one? 1G or 2G

2g's are way more expensive especially AWDs but since being newer will probably break less. but still 1g parts will probably end up going on.

1g's arent as attractive to most people but are cheaper and come with most of the better dsm parts (14b, bov etc.).

it all depends on how much you want to spend and how concerned you are with looks. both can be stupid fast and look good.

but watch out the 7-bolts do crankwalk. my 95 AUTO walked at 140k which is supposed to be unheard of....riight. i want a 1g to mod the hell out of and i wanna keep my 2g for bolt ons and looking sexy.

I got a 99 gsx bone stock I'm surprised the oil was changed auto for 7,800. 2GB my vote.

My Fiance and I have decided that we would like to get a DSM as our next car, myquestion is which one should we get? Obviously AWD,and I want an Auto so that she can drive it too (she loves going fast just as muchs me) and becasue of the Chicago traffic and winters, but not sure if we should go 1G or 2G. From what I've read the 1G 90-92 comes with the stronger 6 bolt motor and the the 1G BOV is better. Are there any downfalls to the 1G? Any comments or opinions are greatly appreceated!

P.S. please don't flame me becasue of such a newb question, I did use search and went through the FAQ and didn't see anything, and on my short breaks here at work Idon't have alot of time to search through all the posts.
which do you prefer ? if budget is not an issue go for the 2g . i havent owned one but my 1g awd tsi was a beast in the snow . if your worried about your girl drivin it put a smaller wastegate actuator on it and adjust the BC all the way down . that will limit her to 5-6 psi.make sure you have great brakes and make sure there is no mirror on the DS visor . make sure it dont leak oil (women never check). if you install a standalone you can set top speed to 75 mph.set the rev limiter to 2500 rpm , or whatever you choose to do . but its your choice !
P.S. dont let your girl see this ! ! LOL

When I first started looking, I thought 1G. I thought I might spend less and get more, but as a few months went by I started thinking, hmmmm. My biggest concern is getting a good engine, but if I pay less for a 2G with high miles. I can rebuild the motor and have a pretty nice car. No Turbo or AWD, but I'm pretty happy with my 97 RS. Great gas mileage too.

1G for more balls and stronger motor. You can find plenty of good 1G's out there that have been maintained and well kept, you just have to look. Just like you would when looking for your "perfect car". I am biased to 1G's cause I have driven both a 1g and 2g and still like the feel of a 1g much more. You sit down a little lower which gives more of a sports car feel. Yes they are older and will have more maintaince to do but that's just how any car would be. The 6 bolt is obviously the stronger of the 2 motors and can handle large amounts of power if tuned properly. I do like the looks of the 2g but the interior is lacking in styling I think.
It basically comes down to what everybody else said though....what do YOU like. Drive both and decide what you want.

What's with all the "1g's have a stronger motor" talk?? The only benefit that I know of when it comes to 1g 4g63's and 2g 4g63's is that the 2g 7 bolt cranks have a "history" (I use that word loosely) of walking. Sure the 1g's come with the better turbo... but comparing motor to motor I don't think one is stronger then the other.

Also, I've never read anywhere that a 7 bolt that crankwalks is due to bolting on mods or adding HP. A granny driving a stocker is just as likely to CW then anybody on this site.

To the OP... if you're looking for more bang for your buck, go with the 1g and it's 14b turbo. If your girl has anything to do with the decision making process as to which you get... go with the 2g (and then throw a EVO III 16g on there when she isn't looking :D) as girls really only care about looks. That's why they spend so much damn time in the bathroom everyday.

I love my 1g. It has a rebuilt 7 bolt and is great to drive. People that think the 1g is ugly are out of their minds IMHO. :D

Well she wants to go just as fast as I do, and actually wants to go off to drifting school, I like the look of both but it sounds like bang for the buck is 1G better looks is 2G. I think I can safely assume that no matter wht I get once I start heavy modding it's time for a motor rebuild anyways which give opportunity to swap to the 6bolt in a 2G I guess it's up to her now. And yeah I'll add the body kit...if I add the body kit she really can't argue with the go fast stuff right?

With women, it's always a game of "Give and Take." If you're going to be heavily modding it, then I say go for a 2g hands down. Might as well pick up a 95 GSX if you're thinking of adding a kit to it. You'll benefit from the Eprom ECU down the road and won't spend any extra money on the 2gB body (let's face it, the 2gB is the more sought after style of the 2g's and newer, which would mean they would fetch a higher price).

Just so there is at least 1 female opinion in here..... We do have a 1g Laser, a 2g Eclipse GST and a 2g Talon. Personally I do prefer the overall looks of the 2g ( and that includes the 3g and 4g's) I drive back and forth from Pa to Jersey on a regular basis and find that the 2g is a much more comfortable ride over the 1g. (it also provides a little more room for extra passengers, such as kids) Although my Eclipse is an automatic, I do prefer the manuals. I would suggest that you both take a good look at all generations and make your decision together based on what the 2 of you like. No offense guys, but you do tend to be a little bias based on what you like. In the long run, this is going to be a car that you and your fiancee will both be driving. Take the car for a test drive and see how it feels to you both.

And not all women spend a lot of time in the bathroom working on their appearance, thank you. I do like performance as well. Which is why I take the Laser or VR4 when I want to play.

LOL... Well, just know that in the end, we appreciate every second you do spend in there. :p

Well that is a bit comforting.

Just a side note: My GST is stock. (keeping it that way since my daughter will be driving it in a few yrs) Looking at a 98 Spyder to make my new playtoy. (We plan on modding that one)

And yes that one will be manual.

go with the 2g!!! 1gs are ugly, there only good for pulling the motor when you blow yours! gsx, of course. but as far as the A/t, dont do it. i heard the a/t sucks. plus who buys a sports car without a stick?
teach your wife to drive it, its not hard at all, if you got the money to buy the car you can afford the clutch if worst comes to worst. i think its sexy when i women is working the stick like a racer!

What is considered gorgeous to one may not be the same for someone else. So saying that the 1g is ugly, while it is your obvious opinion, may not be true for someone else. For instance my husband prefers the look of the 1g. He says the 2g, 3g, and 4g look too chic.

Wow. So how long have you been in a dsm? And why hasn't anyone informed you that the 6 bolt IS stronger? It's common knowledge to any DSM'er that the 6 bolt is far superior to a 7 bolt. I've seen 5 2G's just in our small group crankwalk. So don't try to say that it isn't common in the 95 through early 97 model 4g63's. You don't think one is stronger than that other huh? Well hmm lets see here, the 7 bolt typically does not go past the 400 whp mark and that's pushing the hell out of those rods. A 6 bolt will handle that ALL freaking day long if your tune is done properly. In fact, the 6 bolt record is upwards of almost 600 whp bud. So do some research before you come on here and say stuff like that.

That's an interesting point of view. There's a reason some people go with a 1G in the first place.....BETTER MOTOR that I won't have to pull out :D

I'm not going to get in an arguement over which motor is "stronger." Anything flirting with 400+ HP is fast and only a small percentage of the people on this forum have hit that milestone (whether it be a 1g or a 2g).

Go 1G and teach your girlfriend to drive a manual. 1G's have bigger and better turbos and the 6-bolt motor.

well dsmfamily, this thread was for peoples opinion, and that is what i gave, i do agree about the 3 and 4g after 99 the eclipse went to crap (in my opinion) but 2g too chick noooooooooo.

Asimmons, very good point to defend the 1g, i knew was asking for it with my statement, i was just waiting for a 1g guy to let me have it. but i still stand by words
