[RESOLVED] Decided on a DSM, Now which one? 1G or 2G

I'd take a 1G over a 2G anyday as I like the looks way better, but my friend who used to have a 2G hates the 1G's. I think it's just personal preference so just drive both and see which one you both like better and go with it.

which do you prefer ? if budget is not an issue go for the 2g . i havent owned one but my 1g awd tsi was a beast in the snow . if your worried about your girl drivin it put a smaller wastegate actuator on it and adjust the BC all the way down . that will limit her to 5-6 psi.make sure you have great brakes and make sure there is no mirror on the DS visor . make sure it dont leak oil (women never check). if you install a standalone you can set top speed to 75 mph.set the rev limiter to 2500 rpm , or whatever you choose to do . but its your choice !
P.S. dont let your girl see this ! ! LOL

LOL i agree :D that way you dont have to worry about her killing herself.

well dsmfamily, this thread was for peoples opinion, and that is what i gave, i do agree about the 3 and 4g after 99 the eclipse went to crap (in my opinion) but 2g too chick noooooooooo.

The only reason I did comment was because it came across to me more as a fact than an opinion. Was not, by any means, intended to offend. Just making a point. As far as the 3 and 4gs I think they look like bloated guppies and would take a 1g before them.

Oh and I did get a 97' Spyder. It threw a timing belt, but that just means some quality time for me and hubby to get it up and running. And yes it is a manual.

if you're gonna mod it, 1g's are much simpler with all of the wires and sensors and emissions and stuffs.

I'm always looking at wiring diagrams figuring out how to get something to work again/spoof on my 2g.

Just so there is at least 1 female opinion in here..... We do have a 1g Laser, a 2g Eclipse GST and a 2g Talon. Personally I do prefer the overall looks of the 2g ( and that includes the 3g and 4g's) I drive back and forth from Pa to Jersey on a regular basis and find that the 2g is a much more comfortable ride over the 1g. (it also provides a little more room for extra passengers, such as kids) Although my Eclipse is an automatic, I do prefer the manuals. I would suggest that you both take a good look at all generations and make your decision together based on what the 2 of you like. No offense guys, but you do tend to be a little bias based on what you like. In the long run, this is going to be a car that you and your fiancee will both be driving. Take the car for a test drive and see how it feels to you both.

And not all women spend a lot of time in the bathroom working on their appearance, thank you. I do like performance as well. Which is why I take the Laser or VR4 when I want to play.

Hey now, the very first opinion was from a female :p
But I have owned 1g and 2g's, and the overall comfort level in a 2g ( turbo or non) is way above that of a 1g. More room, better suspension, etc etc. Also the manual tranny in a 2g is like butter compared to the notchy feel of the 1g tranny.
Everyone is saying go for the 97-99 if you are after a 2g, but honestly, if you find a 95-96 for a decent price I would go for it, because it is really pretty inexpensive to do the 97-99 conversion, cause it's really only the front bumper and headlights that truely make the 97-99 look so good.

Forgive me I was mistaken....But I am willing to bet that the rest are male....;)

Personally 1g a or b look nice to me. Then again thats most likely cause i own one of both, a gs and a gst so ya i am a little bias. Could see buying my girl a 2g cause i agree with the whole girly statment, not to offend anyone thats not why im saying it. I just love the 1gs plus if u look in the right place you'll find you might luck out in total i got both my 1gs for 500 bucks of course they both needed a little tlc but they r old cars so thats to be expected. Also i did the head on the gs (timing belt snaped by the looks of it at red line) and i didn't spend over 400 bucks so do the math 2 dsm in my driveway for 900.;)In the end it is you and your girls choice.

Well I own a 2g gst and compaired to my bros 1g its night and day difference. The ride is better and well ever since I got my license I always wanted a 2g. So I guess its up to you and your preference, but in my opinion 2g's look the best.

I don't know if anybody has mentioned this, but:

If you're more likely into a 2G, I would recommend a 98-99 GSX since the have a better design against a crankwalk.

So, if I were you: 98-99 auto GSX, that's as specific as I would get. Good luck.

P.S. I personally like a 2G better as far as looks and a better suspension and the ability to fit bigger wheel/tire combo!

I'm not going to get in an arguement over which motor is "stronger." Anything flirting with 400+ HP is fast and only a small percentage of the people on this forum have hit that milestone (whether it be a 1g or a 2g).

Well there's nothing to argue about anyway. It's just plain facts. And yes your right, 400 whp is quite impressive and feels awesome :D

Ok I found a 1996 GSX auto with 116k miles for $2,900 the guy says the valve cover gasket leaks 1q of oil per month and he has the gaskets just not on the car. Does this sound like a good deal or could the problem be more than that?

thats a great deal , just make sure the car is solid .

So it sounds like an easy fix then? Yeah I thought it was a good deal KBB lowest is $4,100.
i wouldnt exactly say easy but if you have any experience its not that hard . you have to have a good memory .but for the price i would get it . is it gonna be your "other car" ? i just put a trans in my buddys 96 gst yesterday .

I own a 2ga and a 1ga. I love them both. The 1g feels much more sporty for some reason. I love the leather in my 2g and I love the comfortable ride of the 2g. Either way you win, oh, get an awd.

yeah I have another car to drive in the mean time. I have a bit of expierence and the car comes with a set of gaskets and the seller claims that a mechanic told him it wasn't the head gasket.

Easy answer - 2GB. They might be bigger, and heavier...but they're more...modern, and simply look better. I bought a '97 GST Spyder brand new and I still have it if that tells you anything.

one way you can tell without removing anything would be to use a cooling system tester , and pressurize the system . pull the plugs out and let it sit for about a half hour . check the gauge on the tester to see if you lost any pressure . if you did , turn the engine over by hand and check to see if there is any coolant in any of the cylinders . check the oil , and exhaust . if you loose 2-4 psi thats usually normal . the tester will loose that by itself .if the lose is no greater than that i wouldnt worry about it . when i buy a car i usually sit there let it fully warm up , then take it out . if theyre gonna run bad 90% of the time its when they are warm .take it out and "DRIVE" it . dont get on it to hard cause you dont know how long it has been sitting . let wear in a little bit then take out on the highway .

1g
6 bolt ( wont walk )
Better Rods

2g
7bolt (3% walk )
Better Pistons

Both are 4G63 powerhouses and have close to the same limits. If limits are reached / pushed things break. So if you are heading up that way just do yourself a favor and build the internals.

You buy the car that you like the best in looks.
I will not buy a 1g to make it "Nice"
I buy a 1g NT to DD cause its cheap

Ill buy and build the #### out of a 1g cause its cheaper

But my 99GSX cannot be replaced as that weekend car that crushes Evos and STI's.

I personally like the 1G's. I found mine with 83k miles for a 91 TSi.. Paid a bit more than I would have liked to, but overall I have only had one problem, ECU. If you're looking for a 1g, the 90 and 91's are different.. 91-94 can use all the same parts unlike the 90.. also being ECU wise.. Oh and the auto's are very fun not leaving them stock too..

Thanks everyone for your replys and input, as long as I can swing the cash I'm getting the 96 GSX but it might be some time till I can start modding becasue I want to do ALL possible maintanace first.
