i think i have crankwalk bad times. i didnt think 6 bolt blocks could get it but my pulley is moving in and out visibly. ive never seen anything like it. i have no ideas. my car is a gvr4. i need to tune it after the last round of mods but yeah i have no ideas. id like to rip down the engine and figure out whats going on but i have no experience and just a set of jack-stands. LOL.

Yea there should be 4 bolts holding it on there, make sure they are tight.

im gonna check it tomorrow morning before work. i only noticed yesterday and worked two 12 hour shifts so i havent had a chance to look.

so what would a harmonic balancer look like if it went bad? what are the symptoms i should look for?

You just described the symptoms in your first post - they'll have play and you'll see some wobble to them. If you take it off you'll see cracked rubber or chunks of rubber missing around the pulley. It's a relatively common problem... most certainly more common than a 6bolt walking. Best part is it's a cheap fix. I've seen them go for $45 on a few sites.

that would be amazing. LOL. for a second i almost ran outside to start workin on it now. its only 247 in the morning. ::crosses finger:: we'll find out once the sun comes up

Harmonic balancers are very notorious on our dizzums....even a "brand new" oem dealer balancer on my six bolt auto awd is doing the same thing. its fine. crank is tight. Take the thing off and try and get the crank to move in and out of the block. If it doesnt move at all then its the balancer. Regardless if its cracked or torn they can still be bad for being almost 20 years old (six bolts). Even ones sittin on the dam shelves in dealer inventorys apparently.

it worked!!!! when i took off the belts the harmonic balancer fell into two pieces. $84 later and its all fixed. thanks alot to eveyone

No kidding!!! I had mine replaced a few weeks ago because it was wobbling and squeaking like crazy, and my shop had to order 3 of them before they got one that wasn't already falling apart!! WTF brand new parts!!

yeah it was a dorman. lets hope autozone doesn't have the crap that advanced auto sold me. i put in a rebuilt starter from advance and it went bad less then a month after i put it in.
