ok my 1992.5 non turbo 4g63 is throwin a check engine light i does it after 30 to 45 min of driving and i stays on till i turn the car off then it goes away . its done this the last couple of nights any in put where to start diagnosing it, can i still get the codes off of it with out the light on?:hmm:

Follow these steps:
WITH THE KEY OFF
1. Look undwer the dash on the driver side.
2. There is a vertical plug, sometimes with a cover, thats rectangle (this is the Data Link Connector).
3. Looking at the plug youll notice that there are only a few terminals. Now using a analog voltmeter connect the pos to the TOP LEFT (OBD OUTPT), and the ground to the BOTTOM RIGHT (Ground).
4. Turn the key into the on Position. It will give you a read out it passes. Either Long or short jumps with the needle.

Yes your codes will possibly still be stored even if the light is not on. Go to your local Advanced Auto and they will lend you their scanner to use for free.

You can't use a obd2 scanner on a 1g. And yes it will store the code as long as you haven't unhooked your battery or as long as your battery hasn't died.

Also my money's on your o2 sensor since there's something in vfaq about it taking about 30 mins of driving for your o2 sensor to trigger the CEL.

ok thanks now ill have to get the time to check and see if there are any codes on it this is the only time i would like to have a obdII THE ONLY TIME!!!

oh and i took the egr off and caped the to vacum lines in the throttle body but i drove to work and back with no light right after. would me removing the egr cause it

I ditto everything else said here except the stuff about getting it scanned at autozone. You can also use an led to read the codes. .99$ at Radio shack. I second the O2 sensor. Two years ago my car did the exact same thing. The light would go on and off at random intervals without any apparent cause. It was the O2 sensor.

i was thinking on mounting a perament led on a switch to read the codes with would that work

How did you conclude it was the computer? I have a 1992.5 also, and I'm having similar problems. just after installing an alternator.
