I'm hoping someone could help shed some light on this for me, as I'm really scratching my head trying to figure this out:

I have a 91 Eclipse GS N/T 5-speed. The alternator recently died and so I bought a remanufactured unit from Kragen/O'Reilly. When I had the old alternator installed, it seemed that all the necessary wires were hooked up to it except for one. I have this yellow wire that comes out of the same part of the wiring harness for the alternator, but I have NO idea where that wire goes! I'm wondering if this had anything to do with the alternator dying, because just a few months ago it was pulled and bench tested as good.

I've taken some pics so you can see what I mean. If anyone has a similar setup, I would really appreciate some info, because I've had a friend of mine who is way more mechanically inclined take a look at the Haynes shop manual schematics, and he and I couldn't find any mention of this mysterious "extra wire."

I've searched other forums and ran many Google searches with no results. I apologize if this has been answered in another forum.

I'd rather not try and put everything back together again until I know for sure where this wire goes. I don't want to take any chance of frying the battery, relays, ECU, alternator, or all of the above.

Your alternator has the main pigtail, and the wire direct from the battery. There are two different alternators for your car, trust me. I work at Advance Auto Parts, there are two different alternators listed. I believe one is a 65 amp, and one is a 90 amp..

Some one correct me if I am wrong.

it probably goes to your oil pressure light there should be somthing on the oil filter housing. Also your ground wire is not hooked up its should go on the threaded rod with nut.

Sorry I forgot to mention that before. This alternator is a 65 amp, I believe.

The oil sending unit is hooked up as well as the connector that goes all the way up to the power steering pump, so that leaves the 2 wires on the black connector that plug directly into the alternator and also the 2 thicker gauge wires that go on the threaded nut. Still no clue about that damn extra wire...

There is a (oil pressure sending unit) and a (low oil sending unit)! The yellow wire goes to the (low oil sending unit).

By looking at the pics, the oil pressure sending unit is in the wrong spot on the OFH.

Also has nothing to with your alternator!

talondave, you are awesome! Thank you!

Now, I just want to make sure I understand this clearly: the oil pressure sending unit itself is in the wrong spot on the oil filter housing? The oil pressure gauge on the dash has been working since I bought the car back in February of this year. (Yeah, I haven't been a DSM owner for very long, but I've always been a fan :coy: )

So wouldn't the gauge's operation be affected if it were installed in the wrong spot?

As long as the sender is on a pressure off the oil filter housing, you should be fine.

OK, so I've hooked everything back up on the alternator and made sure the belt doesn't squeak, that it's got proper tension, etc. Car runs no problem.

I took a closer look at the oil filter housing, and I seriously think I'm missing that low oil sending unit. :ohdamn:

If anyone knows a good source for these, please let me know.

The (low oil sending unit) goes where your (oil pressure sending unit) is. The (oil pressure sending unit) goes on the bottem side of the OFH. It will be fine to run it the way it is! It wont hurt anything. Hope that helps!!

It really does help, thank you again! :applause:

I've ordered a low oil sending unit. When it arrives, I can install it and throw a connector on that yellow wire. It'll be nice to finally ride around with the knowledge that should anything happen to the amount of oil in the engine, (knock on wood) at least the proper light will turn on and let me know!

i got this same problem except where the blue wire is connected is the yellow wire and the blue wire isnt
