Hey guys i still got my honda as some of you might know. It is my DD and has goten me everywhere i been having burning oil and loud noises in valvetrain. So i bought myself an 18 one night and decided to tear it apart and take a look at the valves. They are all burnt up one of the valves even has a hole/crack in it. So i was thinking about selling it but i came to find a decent price for new oem valves and a gasket set with everything ill need plus head bolts. What else might i need to replace/check im replacing valve stem seals also i am going to check valve guide for clearence tommorow is there anything that is usually mandatory?

The top of the head is pretty mint when i took off the head and looked underneath where the valves seat and the ports for intake or exhaust i cant remember is where the problem is.

Also if anyone has some advice on taking valve keepers out would be great i am going to try doing it without buying special tool. is it possible do it with my hand and various tools i have laying around? I heard hitting the top of the retainer will drop the keepers enough and then just push down and they should drop out. And to reinstall just place retainer with keepers in ontop of valve and just press till seated? Any advice will be greatly appreciated thanks fellas always a help coming here

You can get it apart with a socket, extension and a hammer. Putting it together will require a compressor. I use a c clamp with a modified socket to install the springs. To get them out sit the head flat on a bench. Put the extension in the socket, put the socket over valve retainer and smack the extension with a hammer until both keepers come out.

Look for a BluePoint GA317. Makes removing springs/keepers easy. Well worth the 35 bucks.

advance auto rents a valve spring compressor it was fairly easy to use and basically free bacause they refund all your money when you bring it back

Thanks fellas, this is for a Honda head I know this is a DSM forum but I been posting here more friendly people and more helpful haha. I used to own a 93 Talon miss that thing :(. Ill take a look at that link tho see if its any help..

But anyway, as for the socket way which size should i use? Am I using a socket to fit over it or to just sit on top? And all I gotta do is just hit the extension till the keepers come out? I'll worry about installing them when I get to that but if I don't make that modified socket I'll try going to advance and renting one out.

I just want to get valves out for now to check the valve guides see if there worn out because if so I'm not even gonna bother fixing because I'm very short on money and found a great deal for everything else. I'll give that hammer and socket idea in a bit hopefully it works out.

Ok thanks bud ill post back sometime tonight

Awesome took those valves out easily with the hammer method. It was annoying getting those valve seals out but got them out too. Checked clearence valve stem and valve guide all checked out fine now time to order new valves and gaskets and i should be on my way! hopefully haha..

Now for installing im going to check out some vids and google but if anyone has time to share some knoledge on installing without buying some special tools that would be great or ill rent that tool from advanced actually if needed..

I think the biggest pain in the ass is going to be cleaning the surface for the head gasket going to pick up purple power or what ever they have at the store tommorow hopefully that will help and clean the shit out of the head.

Hey just a little update and a quick question..

Well thanks to bogus i had used his idea in to consideration to clean up the headgasket surface on block and head. Ended up using a higher grit paper smoothed it down very well came out very nice :). I am waiting on my parts to come in i ordered valves and they only sent me 4 so i contacted them and they said its coming just from another warehouse hope all goes good..

Ok to my question On the top of the block where the head gasket covers theres oil and antifreeze mixed and i would like to drain all the oil anyway but i have no idea how i can get this out of there. Its around the cylinders on the outside if that makes any sense :ohdamn:.. Hopefully it does i mean i guess i can just do an oil change run it for 15 and drain and do this repeatedly hoping to flush out the system but i didnt know if there was another way??

This is what i mean i found this pic on google the opening aroudn the cylinders

Also last question i just thought of that is concerning me now and i didnt really think much of it till now.. I bought this civic about a year ago was burning oil and all that typical honda stuff decided to work on it and found the valve lash was so outta wack so i decided to do a valve adjustment. Im not positive on this would have to check But i feel like everytime i adjusted my valves they would go outta spec within minutes of running is there something that could be causing this besides bad valves? Could a rocker arm cause this some how?

The honda is an open deck block, drain the coolent out, most the oil will come out with is.

Once you are done installing the head, fill with water and then add about 1/2 scoop of laundry detergent.

Bring the engine up to op temp, let the therm open, 10-20 mins more run/drive the car.

Then drain the water from the coolant system, and fill with your normal coolant mix.

Yes change the oil too before start up.

So i got everything back together i timed it all right adjusted valve lash and runs like crap. sounds like its about to blow up i thought the ignition timing was advanced way to high so i retarted it all the way to see if it would go away and still runs the same I dont know what else to look for. I am 99% sure i put the timing belt on right i put crank at tdc the cam at tdc put the belt on and that was all. Help im desperate

Back to square one for you....

Do a leak down and compression test

I dont have a ride to go out and get them.. Last time i did a compression test i had 180 across all four.. If i go line up the Crankshaft pulley at tdc and the cam shaft pulley is at tdc then that means i did the timing right correct? Also it sounds like the engine is running really high i cant explain it i smell alot of gas also
