Replacement Block Options -Neon?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

95-99 Neon (SOHC or DOHC), Avenger and Sebring of the same years also have the same 420a. You will probably have a difficult time finding main bearings for the 95, or they will send you 96-99 main bearings and tell you they are for the 95. You would need to notch the block for them to fit. 2.4L blocks from cloud cars will also fit, with a bit of modification. (our only easy swap)

Also, the thread title "need block" sounds like a WTB thread, which isn't allowed outside the classifieds. I know it is not, but may consider re-wording the title to prevent possible grief. (ex: "what blocks fit" or something.)

If you're looking for a direct replacement, the SOHC Neon blocks have different pistons... it'll still work, but it's something to keep in mind.

You can also just buy two sets of 96-99 bearings and use the properly notched ones from both sets.

I think "easy" is an overstatement. :| ;)

So true. :) Compared to other swap "options" we are asked about all the time, (4g63, Avenger V6, B18, and other such non-sense.) the 2.4 is very doable.

ok so ill just look for a neon block another question, i currently have the Turbonetics Delta Gate II External Wastegate #TUR10101 and was thinkin to switch to the Turbonetics Evolution External Wastegate #TUR10780. now would it just bolt up exactly to the manifold and would i be able to use the springs from the other wastegate in this one and what not? is it worth upgrading thank you guys

Ok, so you're gonna reuse your je pistons? What exactly happened to your current block, that it's "messed up"? Please explain in further detail, so that we may more accurately assist you :thumb:

well i was boosting at around 28psi and had it retarded 6 degrees with the msd igntion. i never got it tuned, so my mechanic told me that timing was off to cause all this damage. and what happened was i blew the piston rings and the piston started side walkin up the cylinder wall making the ticking noise. the pistons i have in there are .20 over but i messed it up so bad that i dont even know if ill be able to go up to .40 over therefor i need a new block.

i didnt know that ignition timing played such a huge role, i personally dont know how to tune ignition timing but does that sound true that it was timing that caused all this damage?

Yes...

I don't think anyone wants to hear this, but if you have no clue how to tune a car, you shouldn't have been boosting to 28psi. As you know first hand now, bad things will happen.

Yeah, I was pretty much at a loss of words...but I guess you kinda got learn somehow right? I mean, if you thought it was all gravy to just boost around like that, then you had this coming a long time running now. You need to now look at this, and learn from it...and please, please don't let us read something like this again 6 months from now or so.

EDIT: oh, and please don't tell me you think you're just gonna take all those internals and shove them in a different block and call it a day. That is my way of telling you, umm time to start all over buddy.

ya it sucks im buying everything new sad thing is this fully built motor only had 4000k's on it but oh well time for rebuild. i lernt my lesson keep it at 10psi till tuned :) hope nobody else out there has my problems!

What is your fuel management setup? Ya know, things can still go terribly wrong at 10psi...

Few things;

This is a testament to the strength of the JE's. Other lesser pistons probably wouldn't have lasted that long.

But, I can just about guarantee that those pistons have cracked landings, they may be hairline but they are probably there. IMO cannot re-use.

10psi is too high. Actually, 7psi is too high without a tune. I have recently (over the last few weeks) had an opportunity to break a bunch of engines down (I should probably thread this info). Two big problems stand out. Rods bolts snapping and piston burn outs from tuning problems. My guess is that the bolts are snapping because people reuse the old rod bolts when they are stretched. You should replace these on a rebuild. And the piston burn is due to not being tuned, period. Gotta, gotta tune it. It should be part of your rebuild plans.

Just my 2 centavos.

ya well its fully built with portfueler fuel system, just gotta get all the ignition timing done thats all, but its ok learned my lesson.

I am a noob too, I have the portfueler and atm I am at 5lbs of boost. How do you tune ignition? I am tempted as I had stated in my other thread that I am wondering about the PCM on www.modernperformance.com. I don't want to do what he did, no offense.

I just saw something about the oil pan being different and I'm actually having a problem putting my exhaust on with the sohc neon block. I hope there's a easy fix to this otherwise I gotta get a new pan which will push everything back even more what a pain in the ass.
