I tried to find something about this but I guess I didn't locate what I want to know.

Is the short block the same as the 420a Eclipse?

Block, rods, pistons, crank, etc...etc...

My buddy has a 420a Eclipse and I have a 2.0 Neon engine and the only main differences I can see so far are the heads. His engine is knocking so I figured we could swap the block from my neon engine and put it in his Eclipse... Yes, or No?

Yes it can be done. I did this in a 95 Talon for a freind of mine. The neon engine was from a 98. We had to change all of the sensors from the talon block over to the neon block. You may not need to do that, it depends on what year your car is.

Same block. I run both in my cars. As Ryan mentioned use your original sensors. Just in case (if there were some switches made prior to you owning the car), the 95 Neon block is slightly different. The block has a breather system that you can either adapt to a box or just block off. Also, like all 95 blocks (both Neon and Mitsu) they have different main bearings than the 96 to 99.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I spoke with my dad and he said the engine is from a 96 Neon... I could have sworn it was a 95 4 door.

Anyway I think we might take next weekend to pull it apart and do the swap to get things going.

Gonna revive this thread for a second. What is the difference between a 95, 96, 97 Eclipse/Talon N/A 2.0L ?

I have one here with a big plastic box on the back side of the engine under the intake. It has some lines running to it. Does the 98-99 also have this? I'm wondering about if anything else is different.

I'm just having a hard time identifying which engine I have sitting here. It had been sitting in a Talon for about 3 years, we started it and for about 45 seconds it hammered, but then it went away and has purred like a kitten every other time it has been started, but I'm wanting to change the bearings in it real quick, even though it's not making any noise now, but that 45 seconds it did, kind of scared me and has me worried about down the road.

The engines are all identical. Some of the sensors are different, and the fuel system is setup slightly different between 95 and late 96. Prior to late '96 the FPR was located on the passengers side of the fuel rail, after that date it was located back by the tank.
The black box you're talking about is the cruise control. It was an option, so not all have them.

actually Im building a neon engine in school. the only difference that I see between the neon motor and my motor is that the neon pistons dont have the valve relief ports like our engines. its just flat.

does it make a difference?

Lol, well of course it does.

Let me go out on a limb here and say that you only have one cam (is that the head in the background?). If you bolt a DOHC head on there, you will be losing compression (over stock).

That's probably a block for a SOHC Neon (unless you found some goofy pistons). The reliefs are cut into the DOHC pistons because there is more of a "dome" in the piston, thus allowing for higher compression.

Tell me, do you have a couple of large holes on the front of the block (a little left of the starter)? That would make it a 95 and require different main bearings.

Okay, so we got the swap done. Instead of using the Neon block, I got the engine from a 95 (6/94) Talon. We swapped the entire intake setup with the rail. We had to swap the Crank and Cam position sensor, Oil Sending Unit, and the Coil Pack. We did the entire swap with the transmission still mounted in the car, it took about 8 hours to pull the dead engine and put in the good engine, change oil/filter, and hook up everything.

The heater hoses are much larger on the 98/99 than on the 95 also.

Car runs great now, and I'm very happy we got it done.

Thanks for the responses. :)
