Two weeks ago i replaced my timing belt and the car has been running like garbage since. I feel a vibration in the gas pedal and the car barely pulls hard at all. It feels alot like the timing is retarded...its similar to the feeling of high phantom knock, but my logger isn't picking up any abnormal amounts of knock. My gas mileage has been terrible also. The car idles perfect.

Im 99% sure that the timing belt is on perfect. All the marks line up perfect. I've had 4 different friends look at it and we all agree that all the arrows match up

At first i thought maybe my balance shaft belt was off a little but when I checked it was dead on also.

I advanced my timing a little and the car feels a bit better and the gas mileage improved some but the vibration in my pedal is still there and the car still doesn't pull anywhere near what it did before i did the timing belt.

Does any of this sound familiar? Thanks in advance.

What was the reason that you changed the timing belt? If it broke while you were driving then it could be a number of things. Bent Valves, if not it may be that your valves are not seating properly. It may have knocked them out of alignment. If it was routine then having you arrows lined up is what you need. You need to change the timing. Other than that the only thing that I can see if it only messes up when you are accelerating is the fuel injectors or fuelfilter/pump something like that.

my waterpump was leaking so it had to be replaced.

it doesn't feel like any fuel issue i've ever had. The car was running amazing before i did the timing belt. Now it feels like trash

everything looks perfect. Like i said, i had 4 friends look at it after i was done and they all agreed it looks perfect. When i first drove it I really thought that the timing was off (its the obvious answer) but then i took everything apart again and it looks dead on.

I was thinking maybe it was off before and someone used the cam angle sensor to adjust the timing to correct it. Thats why I advanced the timing to see if i could make it better but it doesn't feel any better.

Did you double check the phasing of the lower balance shaft? Because of the way it's driven off the oil pump the marks can line up but it can be out of phase with the upper one.

Check the VFAQ for the correct procedure and get yourself a timing light to set the CAS.

I can almost guarentee you're right Steve. I used VFAQ when i did all the work but somehow i missed this section

"The balance shaft is in the correct position if the screwdriver can be inserted at least 60 mm (2.4 in.). If the inserted depth is less than this only 20-25 mm (.8-1.0 in.), the oil pump sprocket must be rotated one full turn and timing marks realigned. Recheck the balance shaft position using the screwdriver to ensure that it can be inserted 60 mm (2.4 in.) or more. Keep the screwdriver inserted until timing belt installation is complete (Figure 13).

Caution: MAKE SURE THE BALANCE SHAFT IS PROPERLY POSITIONED. It is possible for the oil pump sprocket timing marks to be properly aligned, and have the balance shaft out of phase. This could result in a SEVERE engine vibration."

I can almost guarentee that is what happened. Thank you thank you thank you.
