I am pulling the engine out of my 1G in order to remove the balance shafts...In the process, and since my pump is leaking, I am thinking about removing the power steering assembly; cooler, reservoir, belt, pump, all lines fittings, and fluid of course. Will I run into any problems doing it this way? I am a big boy so I am not worried about how hard it will be to turn the car at low speeds. I dont auto-x but do plan on going to the strip about twice a month. I am pulling it tonight so any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Check the junkyards for a manual rack. :thumb: They are usually about 75 bucks.

Thanks...I really just wanted to get rid of the power steering. I honestly dont have the money for the rack nor do I have the time to pull it off a car at a junk yard then install it on mine. My car has already been sitting for almost two months because I have not had time to work on it. I just spent almost 1 grand on a ACT Clutch, Fidanza flywheel and a FMIC with piping...I am getting ready to put in a couple of 8 hour days into getting her back on the road. Enough about that...if I just remove the p-steering assembly will I have any issues? The car is obviously my third vehical and is set up (for now) for straight line racing. When its running it is only driven once or twice a week on a cool evening. Thanks again.

I honestly don't know what to expect from just pulling all the PS equipment.

Hopefully someone will chime in. :)

I am just gonna pull everything and plug up the power rack...if I have problems I will post them...thanks man.

TT

don't plug it up

look the line from one port on the rack to the other to save the valve inside. I would also suggest putting in a little resivore to insure the rack keeps fluid in it.

It really does get crappy having a power rack without the pump but go for it :thumb:

I already pulled everything out last night...it was pretty easy. I will probly run it plugged for a while...or I may just use the original reservoir and mount it just above the steering rack. Hopefully and once I reach my qtr mile goal, it wont be too difficult to put back in. If the rack valving is destroyed I will convert to manual rack at that point. Either way, I appreciate the responses. I will post any issues that come up.

Usually the power rack has less assist in the gearing becasue its power assisted. The mannual rack should have better gearing to ease the effort, but it will require more turns. I am assuming this from my dealings with older cars and it may not be correct for DSM's. I have never driven a DSM with a manual rack.

:dsm: Hey awesome ride. I would definitely put in a manual rack anyway while you got the thing apart. It has a quick ratio with more turn lock to lock at the steering wheel. Feels almost like a power as long as the car is rolling. when stopped and cutting is the only time you may tell a real difference. But you should shed a couple pounds and parasatic power loss from driving your pump even though it may not be much its a small pump. If not do as previously stated: leave a little line or fluid to wet the gears I cant wait to see your project completed and your running some times that will make you smile. :thumb: Also thanks everyone who helped me with manual steering by posting all your great info. THIS SITE ROCKS :p

I busted my rack pretty bad, so i cut the belt so it wouldnt burn the p/s pump up. And then I ripped it for a couple months without it and I didn't die. But I'm in the process of putting a reman rack in to get it pass inspection.
