Is there any reason to leave this piece of plastic on the inside of the MAF? I got a new 4" filter and adapter, and the adapter is tapered just like the piece of plastic. I just don't know if it will disrupt the readings or anything, but it just seems like a restriction and air would get trapped in there.

I believe it is there to help direct the air through the meter. I'm not sure if it would have any ill effects if it were removed though. Maybe someone else can chime in with some personal experience.

It actually has two purposes.

1) As mentioned, it helps to direct airflow. But it was designed to be used with the stock air box. If you look at how a stock air filter is angled it will make more sense how it works. With the filter adapter that you have it probably won't make much difference one way or the other.

2) It also helps to hold the honeycombs in place. You have to remove it in order to remove the honeycombs (definitely not recommended). The honeycombs are actually pressed in place pretty securely and they would have to be pushed out from the turbo side towards the air filter side.

If you're anal, like me, then you can trim back the part that extends out at the top.
