Is this piece of plastic necessary?

I did it to my 99gst, i am in the process of putting a 14b an i cleaned the intercooler out. I was told that taking that plastic piece off lets the intercooler get more air. obviously!

BYE, BYE plastic!! Thanks for your help. If anyone else knows of any other useless crap, please feel free to voice your knowledge.:dsm:

I would keep it. It is duct work to ensure the air that enters the vent on the bumper goes THRU thei IC not AROUND the IC. with out it some air will go thru and cool but some will just move around it. It dont weight crap and is easy to remove incase you have to remove your IC. Just keep it.

Without it your gonna less air then with it. It directs all the air through that hole into the intercooler, without it air can just go around it and stuff. I have mine on the car and wont be taking it off till i get a FMIC.

When i looked at it i noticed that it wasn't blocking any surface area so i left alone. damn and i wanted to be able to add "Removed intercooler duct" to my list of mods...

It does the same thing as the plastic thing for the IC, dont move it unless you wanna hurt air flow to the radiator some or if you have to.

yeah its not gonna like hurt you that much, you wont be able to tell or anything. Just dont do it for weight reduction or that makes you dumb, LOL.

How could it possibly get less air without it. The duct is restricting the airflow. That's like saying that you have to put a big duct on a frontmount so the air doesn't go around it. Everybody that i know with an eclipse have taken it off because of the same reason.:thumb:

It's not necessary for the duct inlet to be as big as the frontal area of the IC core. Only 25% of the air that hits the intercooler actually goes through it. A duct, as long as it's inlet is not smaller than 25% of the IC's surface area, will increase the amount of air through the intercooler. I'm quoting info from Corky Bell. He also goes on to say that an efficiency improvement of 20% is possible with a good duct versus none.
