the book has me a little confused, i completly remove the outter bearing caps first (4 of them). then i loosen the rest in 1/4 turn in the order in the book until i can remove them by hand. and i install them in the exact same location i removed them. is this correct? thanks.

not sure about the whole removing them 1/4 turn at a time. i would loosen them all before completely taking them out. but when you install them definately put the bearing caps back in the location they came from.

right, the book has me confused, it says to completly remove the outside bearing caps first, but it only points at 3 and not all 4 of them. then it says to loosin the rest in sequence.

The two front caps are one piece.

right, it was pointing at both of them but the ones on the drivers side, it just pointed at one.
and the exhaust end cap on the pass side, the pic showed it only having 1 bolt. the book just had me confused, but i removed all 4 outter ones first anyway.

i think the cap on the exhaust cam drivers side has 3 bolts holding it on that may be what your book was talking about. it might be the intake cam but i know one of the end caps on the driver side has 3 bolts.

Do what the manual says.
1/4 loosen each cap bolt in the reverse order.
this will prevent the threads from being damaged as you work to release the valve spring pressure. Once they are finger loose you can just remove them.

Tighten them the same way so you dont pull the threads out of the cap bolt holes.
again slowly puls them down against valve spring pressure.

I think loosening them all in 1/4 turn increments is a little excessive. Maybe at first, but afterward, just use common sense to avoid stripping the bolts. I've never loosened the caps in 1/4 turn increments, and the three heads I've built are fine.

Like AAFA said, the point is to not strip the bolts. Just keep that in mind and you'll be fine.
