Redline MTL Vs. MT-90?? Honest opinions please

I'm running the MT-90 on the advice of Jon at TRE, he built the trans so i'm going to listen on what he wants in it. Not sure about the other one, but i can say from changing from regular gear oil to the MT-90 tere is a HUGE difference in the shifting between the 2.

You can mix the two together if you want. Some people on the forum use a 50/50 mix with good results.

Of the two fluids you are looking at, I would reccomend the MT-90. The MTL acts like a 70W at cold temps, and an 80W at operating temps, while the MT-90 is a thicker version of the MTL with a 75W at cold temps, and a 90W at operating temps. The MT-90 is a good street gear oil.

If you are drag racing the car, I would reccomend going with Redline Lightweight Shockproof Gear oil, as it is less likely to oxidize and has a better shear stability. The lightweight shockproof acts like a 75W140 but with a lower internal friction, and has a good capacity for high load transmissions and differentials.

I have had fair to poor experiences with MTL as it has separated and foamed itself due to the high shock load I put on my transmissions. I have been using Lightweight shockproof for a few years now with excellent results.

A key thing to remember is that the clutch is more likely to wear out your transmission faster than the choice between MT-90 and Lightweight Shockproof. You should look into running a twin disk with a smaller diameter and lower moment of inertia if you want to save your transmission from excessive synchro wear and abuse. The main reason I reccomend this is because of the excellent disengagement qualities a twin disk has due to its low moment of inertia; and a positive result of this low MOI is faster and more precise shifting with less drivetrain wear.

Good luck with your decisions!

I run Redline Shockproof heavy in the x-case and rear diff. I also run 2 quarts of Redline shockproof lightweight in the transmission with the rest (0.3 quarts) heavy.

twicks69, would you recommend shockproof heavy in the transfercase and rear end?

Yup -- Heavyweight in the transfer case and rear end!

That's by far the best explanation I've heard. Even my Redline rep couldn't answer my question. Thanks Tim. Mt-90 it is.

Man, I should get a job as a Redline Rep -- maybe they pay decent! ROFL

I think the guy should do more research on the stuff he sells!

Good luck!

Is this ok for stock transmissions?

You can if you want, but I would advise against it in the transmission because the paraffin content of the shockproof gear oil likes to clog up the center differential and the oiling guides in the transmission shafts.

Though I have changed my views on lightweight shockproof gear oil in the transmission, it is mainly due to seeing numerous transmissions over the years with excessive paraffin deposits clogging the passages resulting in lack of oiling to key components.

As you can see, you revived a thread from 6 years ago.

In a stock transmission, MT-85 or MT-90 Redline gear oil would be a better choice.

MTL is to thin MT-90 is to thick. This is directly from Robert at RRE. But the proof is that RedLine made MT-85, and that is what is recommended by the highest reputation shops for our cars. You were supposed to mix the MTL and MT-90 in about a 50/50 mix but a little more of MT-90. The MT-85 comes premixed, if you will, and is the ideal blend for our transaxles, AWD or otherwise.
