Is this something easy one can do themselves, or should it be brought to a shop that specializes in it? I have seen those recharging kits at autozone and what not, but I wasn't too sure. If it isn't too much to have it brought somewhere local any place recommended?

Ergf. Well, it's one of those questions. If you've not done AC work, it can be iffy. There's the routine danger of freeze-burning yourself with the liquid refrigerant, but anyone who's turned a can of dust-off upside down has a grasp on that situation.
A real shop will vacuum down the system and install the proper amount of lubricant and refrigerant, and sniff-test the system for leaks. I think AC servicing around here runs about $150 or so.
A half-can too much can damage the system. It's not really a tough job, but to actually be done correctly requires mostly expensive equipment, and some experience. The worst part about 2Gs is that the filler fitting is almost out of reach, way the hell down there by the compressor- in the DSM tradition. Why put it someplace accessible?
I'd say if you're asking the question, you will be better-off just paying the pro.
