rebuilding a starter

So my starter died on me. I turn the key and i just get one click... so i was wondering if any body has had this problem and rebuilt there starter a and worked. I know you could replace the brushes... but will it work....

Usually the brushes aren't the problem. The problem usually is in the coils of wire around the armature. This is not something that you will easily be able to accomplish.

yea i just open it and it looks like the two top brushes are good but the two bottom ones look worn out.

If the brushes are worn out you can usually get a kit at a local autoparts store, you may have to file them down initially though as some are universal.

As an alternative almost every town has an alternator / starter repair shop (usually some old retired guy) they can rebuild for fractions of what even an Advance auto replacement would cost. Most even rewind the coils if needed, it really doesn't take that long for them because they use a lathe.
