Ok so tax check is coming and I came across a 1ga that needs the motor rebuilt after the previous owner was driving it and the timing belt jumped and a piston ate a valve. Well the last 4g63 I rebuilt I didnt do it right. Well what is the first step after deconstruction? Do I take the bare block to a machine shop? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looKing to make a lot of horsepower. I just want a nice stock rebuild. So any pointers or anything would be awesome. Thanks in advance!!

Ok thanks for your reply. After I hot tank it the machine shops will be able to tell me what size bearings I'll need and what bore right?

Going to interject a little note here. These folks know their stuff. Listen to them. Provide every possible detail about your situation. I'm new to the DSM world, and the knowledge I've gained has been invaluable. The 4G63, in my opinion, is a fairly straightforward engine mechanically speaking. However, they have many items that are unique to them with regard to the timing, fuel, and electrical areas just as with any other engine/car. Curiosity is killing me. What was the "didn't do it right" on your last 4G63?

A list of things to do while it's torn down, in no specific order.

1 : Port and Polish the Head
2 : Install 3g Revised Lifters
3 : Have the crank polished
4 : Deck the Head
5 : Deck the Block surface
6 : Hone the Cylinders
7 : Hot Tank it
8 : Perform the Oil Reliefe port mod. (Use the search to find this.)

That should be good enough to get you started in the correct direction.

Well I used what I thought were some pretty cheap parts. I used NPR pistons king bearings bought a cheap gasket kit and reused most parts. I didn't take the block to get looked at or anything like that. Reused the rods crank and didn't have them looked at. I just want to do this one right ### I'm going to be driving this one for awhile while my challenger sits at home and soaks up the garage. A big thank you to everyone who posted your help is greatly appreciated

Balance shaft elim.
You really dont need to port and polish the head though if you plan on making power later its a good step. Make sure someone WITH EXPERIENCE does it. Otherwise you'll most likely lose power.
Also if you're doing the oil port relief mod, thats usually in conjunction with the Balance shaft elimination to lower oil pressure to a respectable level.

Good call on the BSE. I was leaving things out for the OP to track down on their own as if they were to search 'All' of the suggestions listed in this thread, they would come across that information.

thanks for this thread. your helping more then just the OP =) ive done alot of research and this is the first time i actually heard about the 3g revised lifters... gonna look that up

3G revised lifters are, in case you are unaware, made with a larger port to supply more oil passage through the lifter. This eliminates the dreaded Lifter Tick that all 4G63's endure by some point in time. The Pin-hole passage made for the 1G/2G's were just pathetic.

If someone could provide a link to setting up the thrust bearing that could help the op

Don't forget to have the block magnafluxed. It's a process where a magnetic dye will show cracks in the block. This obviously won't work with an aluminum head where you can get a similar result from 'pressure checking'. While the block is at the machine shop also have them check the cylinders for going out of round and de-crown the top of the cylinder if you're not going to have it bored to the next size up piston.

The shop won't be able to tell you what size bearings you'll need from the block, those parts are related to your crank (which you should have checked for cracks and wear and a good polish). Your connecting rods will need to be checked for stretching and cracks as well. You may as well have them check your oil pump case and gears for acceptable wear as well or just replace it as a unit to be sure. Your head should be checked out at the shop as well to make sure your valve guides weren't damaged in the collision as well. You might as well have them grind your valve seats if you don't go for a complete 'valve job'. New water pump and timing set, plus an OEM rebuild gasket set and you should be good. Oh and make sure to invest in a GOOD torque wrench and have it re-certified immediately, you don't want to strip bolt holes OR have them backing out on you either.

i just got home to do a search but now i understand what your talking about. that is a good upgrade. thanks

Yeah I'm going with 3G litters for sure. I hated the tick in my 2g. I have a friend who mentioned magnafluxed and illhave it all done. I appreciate everyones comments. This site is very helpful indeed. I rebuilt my last motor and did a balance shaft elimination and I got stuck on the oil relief port mod for awhile. I still don't know if it worked or not the oil pressure gauge didn't work.

Only port the OFH if you have ISSUES caused by oil pressure problems. Otherwise, i've consulted with Jack at Jacks Transmissions and he doesn't port them. I havn't ported my most recent OFH, i've been driving on it a few days now and all is still well.
