Hello. I'm planning on doing a 6 bolt block/7 bolt head swap into my 2g. I'm debating on if I should do an oem build on the block. I still have the stock crank, pistons, and rods. If all I need is new rings, bearings, etc.. is forged really worth it? How can I check to see if the crank needs to be turned? I don't want to spend the extra money on forged internals if I don't need them. I'm aiming for a 450-500hp street car.

Stock internals would be pushing it with 500hp. If you have the engine apart, you might as well go forged because if you decide to go higher HP later, you dont have to rebuild again. Its just easier, more cost effective in the long run, and takes the same amount of time. The crank you can measure with a micrometer or digital caliper to check for out of round and you can visually inspect for gouging or wear.

You're right at the limit and are going to be kicking yourself the first time the engine has to come apart again because you decided to save a little money. It'll be cheaper in the long run to do it now and it's good insurance for peace of mind.

i'd go forged rods at least. and new cast pistons that accept a floating wrist pin. the rods are the weak point, the pistons will be fine cast. it'd be cheaper than going for forged everything, and give you some peace of mind. or even go with evo rods/pistons combo. you can find those used for a good price and they are forged rods and partially forged pistons.

Eh your right on the threshold there. I have a buddy thats been running his stock short block 7 bolt at the 450hp range for years with out major problems so it really comes down to you.
Im shooting for 500hp stock short block.
