So my car is losing oil pretty fast (burning it) as well as knocking. I believe it to be a rod bearing.

Now... I obviously wanna rebuild this but need some suggestions as to what to buy.
This is just my daily driver I just bought. I have rebuilt my GST but the 420a is a whole new experience.

I wanna do a basic stock build so can I use that ebay $300 rebuild kit?

something like this..Eagle Talon 2.0 420A 16V Engine Rebuild Kit | eBay

Maybe some of the gaskets I will get elsewhere but what do you think?

did you check out rockauto.com or 420A Mitsubishi / Chrysler 2.0 DOHC 16V Engine Parts

If your valvetrain isnt damaged I would just rebuild the bottom and re gasket everything else.

Also with that kit I would find out who made all the parts going into the kit as it only specifies a few things.

Also a very great stock upgrade it to change from the hydrolic to mechanical tensioner. (there is a kit on the partsdino page) It's known to be more reliable.

If I were you, I would stay away from the eBay kits. Sure people have success with them, but why not spend the extra money and do it right the first time? EBay usually is cheap because the parts are made cheap.

Smash, thanks I will look into the tensioner. What fails with the stock unit?

I will most likely just redo the bottom end. Are Reconditioned good to get? Or do I have to take them to the machinist to have them checked with weight and stuff?

If your budgeting, I wouldn't suggest buying all new internals unless need be. SO I would open it up, look inside, and see whats up before throwing large $$'s at it.

Haven't heard any bad things about the stock 420a, besides some heads leaking a little oil. As with any car, if its been beaten down, its gunna have things wear faster.

I second the tensioner.

If your going to pull the engine to rebuild, check spec, and everything else, its a why not I believe. Its not 100% necessary, but its not a hugely expensive thing and it does work well in the long run.
