Rebuild Question. Rod resizing

Im doing a rebuild on a 6block that suffered a spun rod bearing. The crank is at the machine shop getting reground. So im was just wondering if resizing the rods was a must due to the spun rod or could i just use another set of used rods?

Resize even the new set of used rods. Not resizing the rod probably caused the spun bearing.

Get Eagles or scats....

Im low on funds so the scat's will have to wait for the stroker build up. But typically how much does resizing the rods usually cost, and what exatcly do they do?

A full resize may nip at the heels of scat rod prices.

About $195 done right.. vs $316 for scats.

But then wouldnt the scats have to get resized then?

No they are manufactured dead on much more accurately than even most resized stock rods out of the box...

I'm not sure what you mean by resizing the rods, since you are getting the crank ground down, you would need to get bigger bearings for the mains and/or rods to make up the difference.

To resize a rod they mill the mating surface of the cap. Making the big end smaller.. Then they hone it back to original diamter.. It makes the hole concentric (round) again...

I had my eagles checked at a reputable, performance oriented machine shop. The set of rods did not need resizing on the big end, but were machined to fit the free floating pins for my ross pistons.

Once you take surface off how is honing it going to make it bigger? In other words if they mill it how is it going to get bigger by honing? Why would you resize the end bigger and not just get a larger bearing?

IT's Just like align/line honing main caps on a block...

They mill the mating surface of the cap. Then they bolt it together with the ARP's and tighten to TQ. Now its more oval than round. The milling made it smaller.. Now they line hone the big end to bring it back to round again... They dont take that much off on either operation. Just enough to bring it back to the right size and perfectly round.. Just like they do on blocks.

Sorry thought it sounded like you were saying they shaved more metal off to make it bigger....
