Alright i plan on getting my engine rebuilt. I am not really familiar with engine work. Im a body man not a mechanic. I want to rebuild the whole engine. What do i need to buy for the head and the block. What all does it contain. I want to replace everything in it so please give me a list if you know about engines. Thank you alot. I did research but cant seem to find what im looking for. Thanks for the help

I would rebuild whats not done, vendors have lots of parts for rebuild then you can decide what you need, pricing, just replace everything.

Whats your budget? your goal?

You leave the question wide open.

If you say "I have all the money it takes."

Ill be happy to order you up a set of 24K gold custom forged con rods... Thank you that will be $25,000.00
Will they be any better than a set of Eagle rods? nope... just alot prettier.

So sit down with pen and paper, decide on your goal of 300 hp, 500hp or 900hp
The builds all will differ, some of the parts will be the same, most will not be.

Now on the budget, do not think you can build a 900hp engine on the budget of a 300hp.

Let us know what you have already, and how you plan on tuning.

Do you have DSM link?
What fuel injectors?
What cams?

Figure appox $700-1000 for full machine work
that should cover head rebuild
Crank polish or grind
Balance the rotating assembly
clean/bore/hone block
deck the block

I see you are NT, are you going to stay that way? or do a turbo swap?

97 should be the 420a engine, this is what you plan on building?

your going to spend ALOT of money. the key with n/t is to increase compression as high as possible and to get an engine management system that will help you get the rpm ceiling raised as high as possible. you really are looking, IMO, at a max of 250whp after a substantial amount of work. get the thing balanced extremely well and lets see a n/t hit 12 or 13k rpm. with the right cams, THEN you would make some serious HP. ive ran sport bikes for so long i would just love to see someone apply similiar principles to a 420a. however, most dont because of the cost. just some thoughts.
6k is alot for an engine, you can hit over 200wheel i would think. keep us posted and best of luck to you. i love the 420s, great little engines
thought id add: if your not looking to make alot of HP, its going to be very cheap. if its just a stock rebuild that is. im kind of unclear of your goals.

im taking a wild guess. stock rebuild parts and machinist labor. no way it exceeds 2k. you also want to replace clutch and resurface flywheel. ask machinist what to replace and he will make you a very detailed list.

Are you doing timing belt, water pump, all new filters, plugs/wires, oil pump, new fluids, ect. Or are you just planning internal work? If you want a "new engine" you must consider these things as well and trust me, the price adds up quickly. Good luck with the build.

It literally walks you through a rebuild and tells you what you need. You can order almost everything for a rebuild from partsdinosaur. He has great prices and gives extremely great customer service.

If you are doing a stock rebuild you should be able to get away with:

- Inspect your rods and you should be able to reuse them
- I personally would buy a new set of pistons, but you could have the current ones inspected and reuse them if they are in spec
- You will need new rings
- New rod and main bearings
- Buy all new gaskets, you don't want leaks after assembly
- As for the block machine work, have the crank journals inspected and at least polished, have the cylinders checked for "out of round", and at least hone the cylinders, have the block hot tanked and cleaned out as well, have the head mating surface checked for flatness and resurfaced if necessary...

-As for head work, I would have it cleaned, valves reseated, and have new stem seals installed, Depending on how many miles you have on the motor you might want new springs if they are tired, Have the head gasket mating surface checked for flatness and decked if necessary.

- You need new head studs (you "can" reuse the old ones if they aren't stretched, but why risk it?)
- Get a new timing belt kit, water pump, and oil pump (There is no need to skip these things, unless you want to have to teat the motor back down when they fail shortly after you finish your rebuild)

That is just a short list of things, I am not going to spend all day typing when the information is all over for you to read. I know if you do some searching around on 2gnt.com you will find an answer to every question you can have. Jump in the chat room during the day and there are some experts that will help you out. Remember these cars (and this engine) have been around for almost 2 decades now.. I can almost guarantee that if you have a question, someone else has probably already asked it a dozen times and it have been answered probably twice as much.

The main thing to remember is that if you cut corners during a rebuild you WILL be rebuilding it again or at the very least tearing it down to fix something. Save yourself the headache and take your time.
