rear diff question

I am looking at a 2g talon that's for sale on craigslist. The guy tells me that he blew the rear diff. My question is, how much would that cost to replace if I bought one and did that myself? And what diff should I be looking for? I wasn't sure if the 1g's were the same or if the 2g auto ones worked with it. thanks in advance.

Depends on if it's a LSD diff or a Non-LSD, which funnily enough can matter the most. Most the time if a local pull a part yard has one the rear diff will cost next to nothing. I got a non lsd rear diff for 50 bucks. I kid you not.

So far the rear end has been very difficult for me to replace. Noone makes them for the back anymore besides dsm graveyard ($260 per axle) and the driveshaft shop. (way too much). So the only options are junkyard or used from someone else and you have to make sure that you match transaxle types (manual or auto) and differential types (LSD non LSD). Also, and I'm not 100% sure on this, I think that 95-96 tcases go with 95-96 diffs and 97-99 tcases go with 97-99 diffs only. You pretty much need a rear out of the exact model you have.
