If I remove the belt to the front balance shaft but leave the rear balance shaft in place, will the engine (1) - have more vibration, (2) - have the same vibration, or (3) have less vibration? If the answer is (1), would it be significant?

Thanks-

i no lots of prople that have just lost there belt and it wasnt no big deal.
it seems like people do it on 1g's more then 2g's. why do you want to just
take the belt off ?

Well, the belt just took itself off, and made a big mess. It broke and got lodged in the timing belt and caused it to slip, making all 8 intake valves collide with the pistons. The car's been apart now for a couple weeks and I need to get it running. I'm really not in the mood to drop the oil pan, oil pump, etc. just remove the rear balance shaft. I'd rather just get the damn thing running again.

So you're saying, vibration shouldn't be a problem with just the rear balance shaft still in place?

You might notice a slight vibration at idle or around 3k rpm. If you have stock
motor mounts you probably will not notice it at all. Just make sure that you time
the rear one correctly, it is possible to set it 180 deg off.

hey was reading your thread and you had the exact same problem that i am having now.....i have it all apart and am trying to get the balance shaft belt back on and i cant get it.....but anyways do you how to make sure the balance shaft is timed right? and did it mess up your valves at all? i hope mine didnt get messed up because i just need to get it running again.....any info and tips would be much appreciated!!!!

THANKS

There is a bolt 14mm I think right above where the bearing for the left axle mounts
to the block. It just sitts there not holding anything down. You have to remove that bolt
set the timing mark on the oil pump pulley, stick a phillips screw driver in the hole. If it
only goes in about an inch you have to spin the pulley one complete revolution and try
again. If it goes in about 3-4 inches and the timing marks line up its set correctly.

I think there might be some pics on vfaq but im not sure.

Thanks guys for the help.

There's an easier way to set the rear balance shaft, it is in the Vfaq. You place the timing mark at the top, let go and see which way it falls. I forget the direction right off hand, but if it falls one way, it's correct and if it falls the other way, it's 180 off.

But thanks. I will just let the rear balance shaft ride without the front one.

You asked if I messed up my valves... That's an understatement. If the valves just barely touch the pistons, they are gone. My did a whole lot more than just touch!

yeah im pretty much in the same boat as you i just got mine runnin yesterday again and my valves are pretty much shot!!! sucks so bad......but i have a spare engine and trans so ill probably just switch the two for now and build up the others that i take out of my car.....so more wrenching for me...........SADNESS!!!!

THANKS FOR THE HELP
