re: electrical probs after engine swap

hello there. i just finished an engine swap on my 90 awd tsi, and it runs great but my stereo, dome lights, locks, and horn dont work now. i put on a 3" exhaust and didnt hook up a ground that went from the down pipe to the underside of the car- could this be the prob? also, there was this tiny ground wire, about 8" long that has loops for a bolt on each end that i didnt hook up because i just couldnt remember where it goes!! everything else, headlights, turn signals, dash lights, guages, brake lights, heater still works though. can anyone help here?

Did you check the fuses that would correspond with these problems. Just wondering...Do you have two wires going to the negative side of your battery?

yeah, everything is hooked up, i even figured out where the little extra ground wire i had went but it still didnt fix it. my bat is 2 years old though and needs charging but i think it needs replacing. my headlights turn on but dont pop up too, maybe the dead bat killed my alternator too......crap well, thanks for the reply. oh, and since my battery light is on and the check engine too, could the bat light be the cause of the engine light? my water light is on too.....hmmm,the pump is turning, i have enough water and coolant, it doesnt run hot, and the 3 plugs to the water sensors are on too. weird

well, i took my alternater and bat in for checking. both were dead and i replaced both. now my windows work, my headlights work and pop up, my heater fan works, the cel is still on but the water light isnt on anymore, but there is a catch- nothing works unless the motor is running and the beep you get when your door is opened and the key is in the ignition is sounding all garbled and also only works when the engine is running. what could be the cause of this problem? plz help asap. thanks, charles.

Check the condition of the battery terminal connectors (both power and ground). Replace if pitted or in otherwise poor shape.

Also clean the power/ground conectors.

well, i discovered that my 80 amp alt fuse was blown, so i replaced it and things started to work without the engine running, but my deck, horn, and locks still didnt work so i ended up pulling all my fuses under the dash and when i put them back in BINGO, EVERYTHING WORKS AGAIN!!! weird to me since no fuses were blown and all i did was remove and put them all back in, but im not complaining!!!

Hey guys my lights are starting to act up too. They light up and everything but they dont pop up automatically when i turn the lights on. I have to push the little switch to open them up and then turn my lights on. All i've done right now is just wire up my air/fuel guage and it started happening. Did i do something wrong??
