I have been trying to figure out what this rattling noise is that emits from the upper portion of my transmission (91 GSX). It occurs off throttle when the rpm's begin to decrease after being raised. I dont notice the sound while in gear but while in neutral it is very noticeable. So far it seems to only occur when the car is cold.

As far as my transmission goes the synchros feel decent considering the mileage (115k). I don't get any grinding going into gears. Sometimes when going into reverse I have to release the clutch and engage it a second or third time in order to slide into reverse. Also While standing still I have to do the same thing going into first. Its like I hit a wall then release the clutch, engage it, then it slides in. While moving I can shift into first at close to 15mph. Other than that the only other issue is a general feeling of "slack" in the drivetrain when engaging and releasing the clutch, espeically while in reverse.

Here is a video I shot of the sound. It happens when I release the throttle and the rpm's begin to fall.

Sorry to bump my own thread but it's been almsot a week and no replies. I would really appreciate anyones imput on this as it is quite a strange noise to come from a seemingly healthy drivetrain.

Well with the not going in to gear what happens is your gears stop spining and they are not linded up when you let the cluch out a little it get them moving again and then they fit togther. The noise sound like something came apart. And the slack may be that you final drive is going out.

Thanks for the replies, I have been having a hard time getting the tranny to make that noise again. Its an intermittent occurance that really doesnt seem to coincide with any situations. As soon as it happens again I will see if the clutch engagement has any effect.

hey does it make the noise when the car just sits at idle? if it dose then press the clutch in and see if it goes away. if not something inside the tranny is broken.

Ok, I was able to test it today. The noise/vibration does in fact go away when the clutch is depressed. I was able to repeat it multiple times. While idling the noise would occur and I would then depress the clutch, noise gone. I continued to hold the clutch for a while to make sure the noise didnt return, then after some time and releasing the clutch the noise would immidiately continue.

Hopefully this helps you gurus diagnose this :thumb:
