Random smoke, Boost problems

I have a 96 gst. Just put a 6 bolt in it. Everyonce in awhile, when its ideling smoke will come out that smells like oil. Then it will go away when i drive. And my boost guage goes crazy when i boost. It almost hit 20psi and it hits fuel cut. But its also random. It doesnt happen everytime i boost only sometimes. Was wondering if anyone had anyidea what the problem could be. Maybe the turbo going?

If your engine is completely stock then I would check to make sure nothing is in the way of your wastegate actuator arm or see if it is bent. This would cause the turbo to overboost. As far as the oil coming from the exhaust you can check this by taking off the intake from the turbo and seeing if it has any shaft play. Side to side, up and down and in and out. If it does your seal are going bad inside of it. Also what are you running for boost control device?

Nothing its stock. No upgrades yet. I had to put all my money into the 6 bolt.

Check the turbo for shaftplay then...also how many miles...your valve guides could be worn as well causing oil to burn in the exhaust.

But it only does it randomly and what would be up with it boosting to high and misfiring and hitting fuel cut?

Bad wastegate as he says. I would also replace the pcv valve.
Check the turbo also like he said. Pull off the lower intercooler pipe and see how much oil is in it.
This will tell us if your turbo is bad.
Another thing to look at is the vaccum lines going to your wastegate. Make sure they're not torn or damaged.
If the motor is stock then you're running the Boost Control Solenoid right?

The turbo has a little bit of shaft play. In and out. All the lines are hooked up right..Even when it boosts only to 14 it sputters. Need help
